Recording a band on your laptop?

You'll need to plug those mics in somewhere. How does the sound go from a mic, keyboard, DI, etc into a digital audio file you can edit on your computer?

I'm from an all-in-one digital workstation environment. I started with my still-trusty PortaStudio 424, moved to the MD-8, then up and up...to the point where I was recording with small machines then capturing & mixing at home.

When I finally went full-time laptop I had no idea where to start. I wanted at least 4 simultaneous tracks, preferrably 8 (or more). If you can relate to this on any level you will absolutely positively love The Presonus Firepod

It plugged into my Dell XPS (through the 4-pin firewire port), automatically loaded the drivers and I was in business before I could grab my 2nd beer.

Whoops! So at the end of the day would I endorse the Firepod? HECK YEAH!

Here's a tip - when you buy out of state there's no sales tax!

This is a long time secret for getting great deals on gear.

And the internet makes it even easier! You can comparison shop all day long, get the best price and take it anywhere to negotiate. Here's what I like to do:

Find an item like the Firepod at zZounds and make a note of the price. Remember, if you live out of state there is NO sales tax. This can really ad up.

I'll then go to my local Guitar Center and say "Hey, I can get the Firepod online, delivered, for $X.XX" They're always interested in finding a way to meet that price.

Or ya know what? Sometimes I'll just buy it online and rationalize it with any number of excuses.

Laptops for recording - I use a Dell

Yeah, I know. You're supposed to use Macs for this kind of stuff, right?

Well I've been using my trusty Dells since Windows 95 and can absolutely recommend them for audio recording tasks. Here's a look at available XPS laptops on eBay:
