Choosing a First Aid Booklet for Dogs
Having a good first aid booklet for dogs is essential for anyone who loves their pet. Most dogs die from illness and injury rather than from old age, and the correct action...or lack thereof....can make the difference between life and death for the dog. No dog owner wants to lose their pet because they did not have knowledge to help their dog when needed! But what should you look for in a first aid booklet for dogs?
A First Aid Booklet for Dogs does NOT Replace Your Veterinarian
While having a first aid booklet for dogs can help you help your dog in an emergency, it does not mean that you no longer need your vet. If an injury occurs or you suspect that your dog has a serious illness, you still need to call your vet asap. Dog first aid is just what it implies: the FIRST treatment that your dog receives, before you take him to the vet. I have found some dog first aid information on the internet that implies that having their program means you never need your vet again. This is dangerous! Your dog, as a loving family member, deserves the best health care you can provide. This doesn't mean getting rid of your veterinarian, but you do owe it to your dog to know what to do, in the event of an emergency, BEFORE taking him to your vet. What Information Should be in the First Aid Booklet for Dogs?
As I researched finding a good first aid booklet for dogs, it was important for me to find a guide that was comprehensive. Not only was I looking for basic first aid, but I was also interested in some general health-related information for dogs as well. In addition, with the increased publicity about tainted and unhealthy dog food, I was also looking for some guidance on feeding my dog healthfully.I would recommend that your dog first aid guide include at least the following:
*What to do if your dog stops breathing, or is choking
*How to deal with fractures and broken bones
*How to treat your dog for shock - (Shock is the cause of most deaths following an accident - you should know exactly what to do to ensure that your pet survives)
*Bleeding wounds (How to stop bleeding fast and effectively)
Having the following basic dog health knowledge is also important:
*The common household and garden plants that are DEADLY to your dog
*Common viruses that will kill your dog and what you can do to prevent them.
*Food items that you should never, ever feed your dog.
A first aid booklet for dogs that provides all this information, PLUS ways to keep your dog healthy with healthy food will be an invaluable resource!!
Your First Aid Booklet for Dogs Should be Easy to Read
Unless you are a healthcare professional, it is important that dog first aid information be easy to read and understand. Step by step directions, written in easy to understand language, and no complicated instructions....these are important criteria when choosing a first aid booklet for dogs. The book should be user friendly, with information laid out in a clear, concise way so that you can find what you need, when you need it. FREE Dog Health Information
