[5/2010] It's been a couple of years since I started playing various instruments with my daughter. So far, she has liked xylophone the most, though a tambourine is a close second. She is still very young, so trying to play tunes is difficult. But banging out the basic rhythms on a small drum, or a tambourine is just fine with her. We tried a little toy trumpet - a toy, not a real one, and the sounds she made were, well - loud - that's all I can say about it. But we are having plenty of fun, and since we try out toy instruments before trying for real ones - it does not cost much money.

[6/2011] Another year has passed, and first musical instruments are starting to look more and more like the real thing. One of our neighbors gave us a little piano - very little piano. Even though it's beat up and somewhat out of tune, we have plenty of fun imitating piano players. My daughter does not read music, but she can imitate general tempo and tone of the pieces she hears. No, it's not playing piano - it's more like making sounds with the little piano. But she is having fun with the instrument, and I can observe as her musical skills develop naturally, through play. She is pretty good with rhythm, and her singing has progressed much faster than I expected.

When we visited Hawaii last year, she got an ukulele, and has been having a blast with it. So I am really torn - should I keep her moving in the direction of string instruments, or get her the baby piano I have been thinking about.
But then last weekend, she saw somebody playing a saxophone and she was thrilled. So I don't know.
