First Reel to Reel Tape Player and Recorder

A Real Reel-to-Reel Introduction
Our first reel-to-reel was a Sony reel-to-reel tape recorder and player. I can remember how excited my father was when he purchased it. At that time it was a big step up from vinyl records. It was the first time that we were able to record and hear our own voices play back, an amazing moment for us as young children, and to him, I'm sure. We used the player/recorder to record tapes and send them off to my grandparents each week, no, there was no Skype or email back then...just our tapes and hand-written letters and occasional phone calls. Making those tapes was a big family event, sometimes fun, and sometimes we'd rather be doing something else because we were kids, but it was always amazing (and sometimes embarrassing) to hear ourselves.
Now reel to reel tape players and tapes have become collectors items. When we were clearing out our basement not long ago, we came across a pile of old reel to reel tapes that had belonged to my husband that had some great rock music, which we found were pretty big sellers when we listed them on eBay.
Following is some basic information about Reel to Reel players, and things that may interest you if you are a collector, or if you have come across a stack of old tapes you'd like to listen to but need a player to do so.

Reel to Reel Adaptors
NAB Reel Hub Adaptors for 10.5" Reel to Reel Tape Recorders; ONE PAIR
Amazon Price: $24.50 (as of 02/16/2012)![]()
These are BRAND NEW (custom-made for us) clamp-type NAB reel hub adaptors that fit Pioneer, Akai, Tascam, Fostex, Teac, Tandberg, Revox and other 1/4" reel-to-reel decks that take 10.5" reels and have screw-type or spring-loaded reel retainers. The images show them mounted on a Teac A-3300SX (screw-type) and a Revox A77 (spring-type). These are EXACT duplicates of ones once supplied by Teac with many of their models; note the comparison picture showing the Teac original on the left and our version on the right. Several other manufacturers once made similar one-piece adaptors, including Pioneer, Akai and Wollensak. This is a "reel" hard item to find, but we have them! These are sold by the pair.

- I used to work at a classic rock radio station and we had a reel-to-reel for some commercials. It was a little tough to cue up but it really gave me a feeling of old school when I did.

- I love these old machines. They were so much better than cassette tape. A proper good quality analogue sound.

- And the neat thing is they still can be found today thanks to auctions and estate sales. Thanks for stopping by.

- My mom an aunty used to send taped letters back and forth to each other, as we lived in Illinois and she lived in California, I remember sitting and listening to my aunts letters, it was cool because it sounded like her and we didn't get to see her too often. Thanks for the memories.

- That must have been wonderful...and writing is so silent that you probably learned a lot about what was happening in the family through listening this way. Glad you have such happy memories.

- LOL, yes, sometimes I feel "old" while writing them, and then I have to remind myself that "you're only as old as you feel"...well that used to work, now I have to think up another quote:-) LOL

- It might be worth lots if they do, or be a wonderful thing to listen to if you have tapes.

- Wow! This certainly takes me back. Just think, in a few short years kids won't know what an 8 track or a cassette looks like. Great lens!
