The Best Time Management Tip is To Make Sure To Focus On What's Most Important To You

In "First Things First" Stephen R. Covey asks you to pause and think seriously about the "first things" in your life -- the 3 or 4 things that matter most. What are these 3 or 4 most important things for you? Are these things receiving your care, emphasis, and time?

Does the following sound familiar to you:

  • I need more time.
  • I'm always running around. I want more time for myself. I want more time to do the things I enjoy.
  • I wish I could spend more time with my friends and family.
For lots of people there's a huge gap between what's important to them and the way in which they spend their time. If you're one of these people, read this lens to discover how you can spend your time doing the things you enjoy and being with the people you love.

Habit 3

"First Things First" is Habit 3 of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People".

First Things First

The first three habits of Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" are about independence. The first habit says that you're the creator. The second habit tells you to decide what you want to create. That is, it tells you to come up with a mental picture of what you want to create. The third habit, first things first, is about the physical creation of the life you want. It's the day-in, day-out, moment-by-moment doing it.

Covey indicates that the best time management advice is the following: "Organize and execute around priorities". In other words, stop trying to do it all. Instead, decide what's most important to you and do that.
Important!

"Things which matter most should never be at the mercy of things which matter least."

-- Goethe

Covey explains that you need to divide tasks into the following four quadrants:

1. Important and Urgent (crises, deadline-driven projects)
2. Important, Not Urgent (preparation, prevention, planning, relationships)
3. Urgent, Not Important (interruptions, many pressing matters)
4. Not Urgent, Not Important (trivia, time wasters)

Most people spend most of their time in quadrants 1 and 3. However, quadrant 2 is where quality happens. This book teaches you how to spend most of your time in quadrant 2.

Time Management Matrix

Say "No"

Covey talks in his book about his wife Sandra who was invited to serve as chairman of a committe in a community endeavor. She was honored to have been asked, but she was working on several things which were truly important to her and she didn't want to do it. However, she felt pressured into it and so she agreed. Sandra then called a dear friend to ask her if she'd serve on the committe, and here's what her friend said:

"Sandra, that sounds like a wonderful project, a really worthy undertaking. I appreciate so much your inviting me to be a part of it. I feel honored by it. For a number of reasons I won't be participating myself, but I want you to know how much I appreciate your invitation."
When Sandra hung up the phone she turned to her husband and said: "I wish I'd done that." In order to take care of your priorities you have to learn how to say "no" to things which are not in line with your goals and objectives. I talk more about this in my posts "No" Your Way to Increased Productivity and Three Awesome Productivity Tips.

A Guide for Creating New Habits
A habit is basically a set of actions that you carry out on a regular basis without thinking. In fact, scientific research has shown that when you carry out certain actions in a repetitive and continuous manner, neural pathways are created in the brain, making the habit almost completely automatic. The actions we carry out repeatedly form our habits, and then our habits create our lives.
