Tips For A First Time Passport Applicant

When you are traveling outside of the country you were born in, having documentation that will prove your citizen status is essential. This is the only way you can cross over borders to get to other countries. The process for a first time U.S. passport applicant is not a hard thing to go through and following these easy tips will help you.

Application Process

There are a few USA passport office forms that you will be required to present when you arrive at the immigration office. The main application can be obtained by downloading it online. It must be filled out completely, but not signed. This is done when you go to the office, in person.

Some of the documentation you need to present will include a certified birth certificate. This is to prove that you are, in fact, a citizen of your country. Some people may use other forms of proof; you will have to check to see what other options can be used. Whichever proof of citizenship you use, you must bring it with you at the time of your application.

When you submit your application, you will have to provide a valid photo ID to prove who you are. Most of the time, a drivers license will do the trick but it would be a good idea to check first to make sure. There are other forms of ID that you can bring with you, and the application will list different options.

Once you have gathered all of the required identification, you must then get your passport photo taken. Most camera shops and portrait studios offer this service for a nominal fee. There are strict rules as to how these photos must be taken. The pictures can not be older than six months and they have to represent what you look like right now. You can wear street clothes but you can not wear hats or sunglasses. If you wear glasses, you should wear them for the photo.

Your photos must be taken in color and you have to have two of them taken. The sizes must be of a certain dimension which is outlined on the application. They are usually taken with a white or similar background. You can not smile or pose in these photos and you have to look straight ahead at the camera.

When all the information you need is gathered, you will now bring it to a passport agency office. The price you will have to pay will depend on how quickly you need it to come back to you. If you do need it fast, it will end up being more expensive. You will also have to go to a different office in order to get it expedited.

First time passport applications are not hard to fill out. They are self explanatory and should pose no difficulties. There is a bit of information gathering on your part, but that part should be fairly simple. If you need help, there are several websites online that you can use as a reference point. You can also download the required U S passport office applications from these sites as well. Additionally, the applications are easily attainable from a processing center or even your local post office.
