Is being Irish American just a state of mind?

If you think being an Irish American means loving the color green (I do) and having a thirst for a cold pint (guilty, as charged) you would be describing about 75% of ALL Americans. For me, having a mother born in County Clare, Ireland certainly allows me the priviledge of claiming the Irish for my own, but it could be that being Irish American is more a state of mind and available to all who welcome a laugh at their own expense!

'Tis Myself in the Emerald Isle!

Tracing my Irish roots...

Three years after my beloved Irish mother passed away, I finally made the trip. As a teenager, I had already shuttled her visiting Irish sisters back and forth between Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, laughed at their bothersome brogues and snickered about their snoring. Many years later it was my turn to visit them.

Irish Moonshine

Glory Be To Paddy, It's My Uncle's Homemade Poteen

Okay, here was my problem. I had never been overseas before, and like many paranoid Americans, wondered whether or not I would have any problems with the food or water. I didn't want to take a bathroom break every ten minutes. So I ate the traditional big Irish breakfast, but had a very light lunch, just to be on the safe side. Trouble was, in the evening while we were visiting all the relatives, out would came a plate full of biscuits (cookies) and a bottle of good old Irish whiskey. No meal to speak of. As my mother would say, the brew made short work of me on several occasions. But when my cocky Irish cousins didn't think I'd have the stomach for my uncle's homemade poteen (moonshine), I showed them what we Yanks are made of...just barely.

Salute your ancient Celtic ancestors!

A rite of passage for every visiting Irish American

Pubs are a day-in and day-out part of Irish social life, and children are free to run in and out. No Irish American in their right minds would travel to the old country without having a pint of dark, rich Guinness.

Irish brewing magic...

Guinness to the Irish is like Wal-Mart to Americans. Everywhere you go. But consider that Sam Walton founded his company in 1962, and people have been enjoying the popular dry stout beer first made in the brewery of Arthur Guinness in 1925 at St. James's Gate, Dublin. Over 250 years of Irish brewing magic.

Touring the Guinness Storehouse

The Storehouse was originally built in 1904 to house the Guinness fermentation process and is modelled on a giant pint glass, stretching up from reception on the ground floor to The Gravity Bar in the sky. If filled, this giant pint would hold approximately 14.3 million pints of GUINNESS! You will view Guinness branded memorabilia and the stories of the popular icons from the Toucan to the Guinness Surfers. You can also watch a selection of Guinness TV ads which have made the brand a well-known Irish symbol in every corner of the globe. The My Goodness My Gilroy section is an exhibition of John Gilroy's work, the artist responsible for the famous Guinness advertising from the 1930s to 1960s. Admission for adults is $13.50.

Love

It is easy to halve the potato where there is love.

Make sure you enjoy a hearty Irish breakfast

Typically for breakfast I would enjoy bacon rashers, sausages, fried eggs, a sliced potato, and toast. The Irish were not always celebrated for their culinary skills, but everyone in Ireland enjoys the flavor of great pub cooking.

The best part...

The best part of Ireland for me was the music. But it didn't start out that way. The first two pubs we went into the musicians played the same old American song, John Denver's popular hit "Take Me Home Country Roads." Happily, our luck changed and we were soon transported by the Irish fiddle, flute, mandolin and tin whistles.

Did my mother really have a brogue?

My Irish mother spoke like any other American, or so I thought. Once in a great while one of my friends from school would say, "I love your mother's accent!" The mystery was finally solved when I journeyed to Ireland and heard my Irish relatives pronounce their surname Va-HON (Vaughan). My mother always referred to her maiden name in the more anglo-version "Von."

"Circling over Shannon" (phr): drunk. Derived from the visit of Boris Yeltsin to Shannon when he was apparantly too drunk to get off the plane. They circled six times to sober him up!

Irish American Actors

Back home in America, there are plenty of other citizens, like myself who trace their ancestry back to Ireland. About 37 million or roughly 12% back in 2006. Some are doing better than others, of course, but these familiar faces give new meaning to "the luck of the Irish."
