Fantasy Football 2009: Maurice Jones-Drew or Adrian Peterson
Ranked #17,566 in Sports, #408,803 overall
The Skinny
The big debate going into this year's fantasy football season is who should be the number 1 pick? Fred Taylor's departure from Jacksonville has Maurice Jones-Drew shooting up draft boards based on anticipation of an increased workload. Minnesota's Adrian Peterson lived up to lofty standards last year and has remained on top of many experts' lists.
Rushing Breakdown
Peterson gets the edge here as he rushed for an astounding 1,760 yards in 2008 with an average of 4.8 yards per carry along with 10 touchdowns. Jones-Drew in a split role, rushed for 824 yards with an average of 4.2 yards per carry along with 12 touchdowns. What would give me pause here is Peterson's robust 363 carries last season, for a guy who does have a history of injuries that is a lot of wear and tear in one season.
Receiving Breakdown:
This one goes to Jones-Drew hands down. The Jaguars running back has proven himself to be a complete back, not only rushing and receiving, but blocking as well which leads many to believe that he will stay on the field in obvious passing situations as well. Jones-Drew caught 62 passes last year for 565 yards and 2 touchdowns (in deeper leagues, you may be lucky if your third or fourth receiver catches 62 passes). Peterson caught 21 passes last season for 125 yards, which combined with his rushing total shows his potential to go over 2,000 total yards in 2009.
The Recommendation:
Like I mentioned earlier the debate here comes from Jones-Drew's anticipated increased workload. Peterson had many more touches last season than Jones-Drew, however, Jones-Drew had more touchdowns. The belief is that Jones-Drew will become Jacksonville's version of Brian Westbrook (which isn't far-fetched, because Jacksonville's receivers aren't any better than what Westbrook has had in Philly). Peterson however, is the proven commodity; his injury history aside, he has asserted himself as a transcendent talent since day one. With Minnesota's strong offensive line and playing half his games on a fast track in a dome, 2,000 rushing yards is never out of the question with Peterson. My recommendation is two-fold however, in standard leagues, take Peterson, but in leagues that award points per reception take Jones-Drew.
