Koi Fish Beauty and Allure

Koi Fish, fresh water fish, aquariums and ponds

I'll be honest here - I know absolutely nothing about Koi fish!

When I was in my first or second grade, my dad started a fresh water aquarium in the living room. He really enjoyed taking care of it so we had plenty of beautiful fish and live plants at all times.

As a college student I joined a club, learned more about fresh water aquariums and fish from experienced fresh-water-fish breeders - and was even breeding certain kinds of fish for some time.

Although I've always remained an admirer of ponds and aquariums of all kinds and sizes, that's was the end of my fish-related life story - until I met Karla and her husband Al.

The Beauty and Allure Of Koi

by Karla Deacon

What is the allure of the Koi fish? I have been spending some time recently trying to pinpoint exactly what it is that is so intriguing about them.

My fascination with Koi began as a young child. Every year my grandmother would take us to the Botanical Gardens to see the Spring Flower Show.

As beautiful as the flowers were, I was always drawn to the Koi pond. I would linger there watching the brilliant colors and graceful undulations of the Koi fish as they would glide through the pond.

To this day I am just as fascinated as I was then. Each pond has it's own special character and "feel".

The peace and tranquility that surrounds a Koi pond must be part of the attraction. Stepping out into your own Koi pond water garden is like stepping into a different place and time.

You can feel the stress melt away as you sit next to the pond and watch the vibrant colors of the fish gliding through the water.

Those of us that have Koi know that as you become acquainted with them you begin to discover their individual personalities... they make wonderful pets and can even be trained to eat from your hand!

Finally, who can resist the rich history of this fish?

Brought to the rice paddies to serve as food for the workers, the common carp was carefully and patiently bred by the Japanese for their glorius colors and patterns, until they became the beautiful Koi fish we know today.

They are the subject of many pieces of beautiful Koi art, myths and Japanese folklore.

As you can see, there are many reasons why people succumb to the allure of the Koi!"

Koi Pond Plants

by Karla Deacon

The benefits of Koi Pond plants far outweigh any negatives that might be associated with them. They aren't that expensive and they aren't an inordinate amount of work.

Just what are these benefits? For starters they enhance the "eye appeal" of your pond. In fact, instead of calling it a pond, you might even call it a water garden!

Besides being aesthetically appealing pond plants create a healthier and more stable ecosystem in addition to providing many benefits for your fish.

They provide shade for your fish on hot summer days. This shade also helps keep the water temperature down, thus inhibiting algae growth and lowering the stress levels of your Koi. Excessive heat stresses them and suppresses their immune systems.

Shading your pond also lowers the ambient water temperature so you don't get such wide temperature fluctuations between night and day. This also keeps stress levels lower for your fish.

The shade and vegetative cover also protect them from Koi predators. It gives them a place to hide from danger!

Another huge benefit of Koi pond plants is that they help control the algae growth in your pond. Pond plants and algae compete for the same food sources. Since plants are higher on the food chain than algae they win in the competitive arena, thus preventing the growth of more Koi pond algae!

Plants also provide fresh, nutritious snacks that your Koi find tasty so don't begrudge them nibbling on your plant leaves! They may even occasionally enjoy digging in the root systems, so you might find that you have to place protection over the roots.

Don't let this minor inconvenience deter you from having Koi pond plants. You just have to outsmart your fish!

Koi Pets

by Karla Deacon

Can fish really make good pets? Some people don't think so, but if you are a Koi owner you know differently.

To many people, for example all orange Koi look alike, but once you get to know your fish you begin to notice that you can tell one from another very easily, even if they have the exact same coloring.

So how do you get to know your Koi? Just like any other relationship you get to know your Koi by spending time with them and observing how they interact with each other and their environment.

You can do this by pulling up a lounge chair and spending some time relaxing by your pond. Don't forget that your Koi need to get to know you too, and once they do they will look forward to your visits. (particularly at feeding time!)

Feeding time is another opportunity for getting to know your fish better. It is one of the best times to observe their individual personality traits. Like us some are bold, some are shy, some aggressive, some passive... Feeding time is always a fun time because your Koi are usually at their most active then.

You can also teach your fish to eat out of your hand. It is a lot of fun and visitors and children will get a big kick out of hand feeding your Koi.

So the answer to the question "Can fish make good pets?" is, in my opinion, a resounding YES!

I used to have a small Koi pond. I'd like to build another in my next house. Cute fish.

I understand that some Koi can get to be massive in size, although ours didn't quite get the chance to do so.

One day I saw a red-tailed hawk sitting on a fence overlooking our pond and peering intently at the water. Sadly within a day all of our orange and yellow Koi were gone. We had some black ones that continued to do just fine though :p

    Thank you for the lens!

Koi are as interesting to watch as they are beautiful. They are also quite hardy, making it possible for many water gardeners to successfully keep koi in their ponds.

We added 10 small goldfish to our garden pond for our wedding. For the next 8 winters we moved them indoors, then put them back outside in the spring. They loved their life and increased to more than 24 until last spring when a big blue heron discovered them and had a nice lunch while I was away from home. We miss our little pals - they did let us know when they wanted to be fed - they would smack their lips at the water's surface to call us!
