I love fish and chips... we used to have a place where I live (at least 15 years ago) that served the best fish and chips. The family ended up moving and so the business was never taken over... I miss that place :( but had a lot of great memories there with my mom :)

I love fish n chips. When I was younger, I had the good fortune to travel to the UK with my then husband. OMG!!! At the shop we went to, we actually got them in the newspaper. We loved it. Hadn't had it that way in years, and haven't found any place that makes them so yummy like that since. Than you for sharing! It brings back delicious memories!!!

Yea, we need a "fish and chips, English style" here in Virignia, with "take away" . Have Arthur Teachers, but not the same. Congrads on your Squidoo level 59. Am going for next level. Conversations helps with new topics. Thanks.
  • Tolovaj Mar 15, 2012 @ 1:22 pm | delete
I noticed English cuisine (I am not talking about fish and chips) is becoming more and more popular in continental Europe last years. Is the reason we are trying to find the way to eat real food again? Well, fish and chips is certainly tasty addition to the menu. When I will come to England, this would me my first choice!

I grew up in North London and when we could afford it, loved to walk to the local fish and chip shop for chips. They were wrapped in newspaper then. I live in the USA now but still love them and always, always get some when I visit my family there each year. There truly is nothing like a portion of freshly fried chips made from British potatoes, in your local Chippy.
  • Rosaquid Mar 14, 2012 @ 2:54 pm | delete
Fun lens. Thanks for the trip "across the pond."

I love this lens! Like you, i was brought up in a chippy owning family (North Wales), my family owned it for over 70 years. When it closed in 2001 there was four generations of us working there at the time. We still miss the shop and the fish and chips lots. Thanks for reviving lots of lovely memories for me!

Excellent lens! You've put a lot of hard work into this thing and it shows. I never knew so much about fish and chips as I know now after reading this thing. I've always enjoyed a good order of them too, though they can be so hard to find on this side of the pond short of making them yourself.
  • Tipi Jan 25, 2012 @ 2:01 pm | delete

I enjoyed reading your memories of growing up in a fish and chip shop. I'm an American who now has a deeper appreciation for the British tradition of eating fish and chips! I hope to cross the pond one day and visit a fish and chip shop. All the best.

Truly wonderful lens! Oh, what I would do for some real fish & chips. I live in the US, and have yet to find any place that can make authentic fish & chips. I learned to love this treat in New Zealand, and during a trip to England a few years ago, the one thing that I needed to do right away was have real fish & chips. :) Congratulations on your Lens of the Day! :) Kath
  • BobBlackUK Oct 9, 2011 @ 4:03 am | delete
What a wonderful lens! So many amazing memories. In the 1950s and 60s we had fish and chips at least once a week. When we went to the "pictures", we always always went straight to the Chippie afterwards and walked home eating hot chips smothered in salt 'n vinegar out of newspaper. In Germany in the British Army in the late 50s I used to buy chips in a paper cone, always with a big dollop of mayonnaise. Mayonnaise never seemed to catch on in the UK.
  • cffutah Oct 7, 2011 @ 8:29 am | delete

I'm not that big a fan of fish--but I do like this battered and deep fried kind. Although we did have an Arthur Treacher's at one time, I've never had "real" british Fish & Chips. My guy promises me that I'll get the real deal when we visit England next year. Great lens--I really enjoyed it!

My first fish and chip in London was in 1992 a nice location near Totting and I enjoyed it immensely. What I liked about the fish and chips was that fish was fresh and I got mines in the brown paper bag, excellent

I absoluely love fish and chips open outside by the seaside. My mum is from Norfolk and she is very fussy about good quality fish and chips and I have to agree, you can't beat seaside ones, they are just so FRESH!!! I love old glass bottles of pop and it's great to wash it all down. I loved your text about not putting vinegar on chips that are wrapped as they go soggy when you get them home. I TOTALLY AGREE!! I DO THE SAME :D This is a fantastic lens and really takes me back to when my Nan from Norfolk was alive. God rest her soul!

Although I used to spend my holidays in England, I always wondered what could Fish and Chips be... I mean, I never ate them nor entered a Fish and Chips store! Now that the Belgian and purist that I am knowss what they are, I know that I wouldn't like them BUT... I'll give a try next time I'll go to England as I want to make sure that I really don't like.
However, your lens is fantastic as it's full of great info - more than I've ever found on the subject!
Indeed this is a great lens!
    Dom.

I'd suggest asking a local if possible for the best fish and chip shop. If not, look for one that has a lot of customers queuing. A fast turn over means you'll get freshly cooked food, rather than stuff that has been kept in a warmer for a while. I hope you get the opportunity to try them!
  • AddaptAbilities Oct 9, 2009 @ 3:34 am | delete
I've been to the UK a couple of times, but I've actually been dissuaded from trying fish and chips. I'm generally a vegetarian but I've been known to make exceptions when trying local cuisine. Do you have any good advice for how to choose a chip shop for inexperienced Yanks? It's not something that's done here in San Francisco ... we're more of a vegan cheese steak place (yes, really).

You are making me so hungry right about now and you brought back some great memories of my childhood. We would occasionally go over to the next town and have fish and chips for dinner. It was heaven. If dinner was over and dad still had a craving for chips, we would head over and each of us would get a paper cone full of chips. I do remember the cost of that... fifteen cents! Imagine five us us with chips for under a buck!

    Those definitely were the days!

I always thought Chip Butties were only heard of up here in the north of England. When I was on holiday in Devon I asked for a Chip Buttie and they had no idea what I was talking about. When I explained that it was like a sandwich she buttered me some bread and put about 5 chips in it.

It was nice but didn't really fill me up!

Chip butties are best in big white breadcakes with lots of marg.

Hmm when I was a kid, Saturday nights were fish and chips, with Doctor Who for me and ToTP for my sisters. I also used to love the scraps. I remember there being one really good chippie in Gloucester - Creswells. There were many others, but they were top. I always asked for loads of salt and vinegar too. I was a fan of cockles until I got too many sandy ones, and went off them. Good lens!

I've seen a few of the mobile chippies, but not many although you do tend to find them at Country fairs etc. Where I live in the south of England, most shops do still wrap in paper, but not newspaper. It's more common than to have them in a polystyrene tray...thankfully.
  • RolandTumble Nov 22, 2008 @ 2:18 pm | delete
Here in the States there's a restaurant chain that's mostly known for their burgers, but do a quite passable F&C as well (their standard fried potatoes are "steak fries" already). They offer them in cod or salmon--the latter's quite different, but surprisingly yummy.
  • alkenmrs Nov 19, 2008 @ 4:30 pm | delete
Those were the days of good ol' fish and chips. Not the same these days though. I remember working in the local chippy after school and on Saturdays and back then you had a choice of fish, especially on a Friday, being fish and chip day. Cod, Haddock, Plaice and Skate to name but a few but now, thanks to over fishing, we are lucky to find a chippy that still fries cod or something similar.

We even used to have a Fish and Chip van come around once a week, much like Mr Whippy or Tonibell used to. They are ice cream vans BTW!!

It was a sad day when they banned the use of newspaper to wrap it all up in. Somehow it doesn't taste the same in polystyrene trays.

  • AndyPo Nov 3, 2008 @ 8:29 am | delete
I was just reading your Bournemouth lens and thinking about Fish and Chips and I see you've written a Fish and Chips lens too. Excellent. I love good fish and chips, usually by the sea-side - I think they are better there, or maybe it is just the sea-air that adds to the experience, but they and certainly cheaper than in London. I lived by the sea in Somerset, until late teenage, so we had Fish and Chips, wrapped in newspaper, as a treat occasionally.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful childhood memories, I so enjoyed your lens. I love Fish & Chips, but there is only one restaurant here I will eat them. I put malt vinegar or (fresh) lemon juice on my fries. How about adding in a module for recommended fish and chip shops? For example, the best fish and Chips I've ever had were in the beach cafe at Dunwich on the Suffolk coast. The fish used hadn't even left the beach where they were landed!

Congratulations on LOTD! Here on the Maine coast in U.S.A., I used to get "haddock box dinners", which consisted of a breaded haddock square fried in oil on top of nice chunky home sliced French fries with a slice of a sour pickle in a white box. Yummy!

Oh I love fish and chips! Great lens :)
  • Lynx92 Jul 30, 2008 @ 9:15 am | delete
Reading this great lens has made me feel very hungry. I love fish and chips with mushy peas and bread and butter. Trouble is most of the chippies near here are kebab houses now! Most of them provide decent food, but they are not the same as a traditional chippy.
  • Stazjia Jul 30, 2008 @ 7:37 am | delete
This brings back so many memories of fish and chips wrapped in newspaper so we got to read and eat at the same time. Brilliant 5* lens.

Well done Debnet, on getting LOTD. A great lens - you deserve it!

You can't beat "Fish shop chips" and I still always have them with fried eggs - a substitute for the fish that the rest of the family liked when I was a child, but I didn't.
  • FengShuiStyle Jul 30, 2008 @ 1:56 am | delete
Well, I can certainly see why you won LOTD! Congratulations. What a lovely trip down memory lane. I'm half English, so I appreciate my fish & chips right along with you!
  • alslad Jul 30, 2008 @ 12:57 am | delete
Great lens well worthy of LOTD! I am a Leeds lad and remember how "sit down fish & chips" at Harry Ramsdens was a special treat if we were well behaved . Thanks for stirring the memories, but now I'm going to have to go there for lunch today!

I love fish and chips when the fish is made with cod. I hear fish and chips is really popular in England. There is an world famous english chef who cooked world famous fish and chips as one of his meals when he was on Iron Chef America last year.

I used to go to Skipper's for their all you can eat fish and chips special. The food I did not like is their clam chowder. I would take a piece of their fried fish dip it into ketchup then dip french fries. I would eat until I got stuffed. But I do not go over there because eating too many fried foods is not good for my heart. So I have to cut down on my fried foods I intake.

Nice lens and congrats on the LOTD, but I have to ask... why are they called "chips"? Shouldn't it be called "fish and fries"?
  • LisaKnowsTheSecret Jul 29, 2008 @ 2:07 pm | delete
I love a cornish pasty with my chips but sadly nobody makes them as well as my grandma used to. She was born and bred in Plymouth and as a little girl I remember her taking what seemed to be a whole day chopping meat, potatoes and onions into tiny little pieces to make her pasties.

Well done for such a fab lens, you're an inspiration.

Being British but living in the US for so long I certainly miss the fish and chip shop. I think it is funny that there seems to be a north south divide on the question of mushy peas too!

Fantastic lens, I am literally drooling there is no where else in the world that serves fish and chips quite the same as in the UK and it's the thing I am most homesick for (even after 20 years away).

Great lens! I visited London about 15 years ago and eating fish & chips from little shops are some of my favorite memories. The vinegar just made them perfect!! I still haven't found quite the right thing here where I live in the U.S. Now you've made me hungry! :)

Great page. When I fly home to New Zealand I'm thinking about a good feed from about Fiji onward; the sensual pleasure of ripping open the end of the newspaper and that whiff of steam and the savor of the first chip. I hope you know you're responsible now for a severe case of chipalgia!
  • JaguarJulie Jul 1, 2008 @ 4:56 pm | delete
Ah, most interesting lens and whats coincidental is that we were riding home -- me on the back of a Piaggio -- and I was thinking about which frozen Jenny Craig dinner I'd be fixing! Yep, FISH & CHIPS! Yumm -- have a taste for that old fashioned Arthur Treacher's that we used to have so long ago.
  • debnet Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:27 am | delete
If the Chippie is jam packed, that's a sign of a good chippie. You should take the time to stop by & see why it's so popular...I'll have to make note...visit Guisley chippie :)
  • Hillandglen Jun 30, 2008 @ 9:01 am | delete
    Hehe,

My Mum lives in Baildon, Shipley and we drive past the Guiseley chippy everytime. Its always jam-packed with folk though, so I've never tried their Fish & Chips.
