Tips for keeping the fish safe

I am a strong believer in catch and release and I want to see my big one swim back healthy in the water! Who knowes maybe I catch him when his bigger!!! I do not want to hurt any of my fish!! Here follows a few tips in keeping fish safe :

# safety tips :

1. Use a landing mat and do not place fish on rocky ord uneven ground

2. Unhook the fish as soon as possible, before weighing it

3. Always hook your scale on the net or weighing mat and not through its
gills. Never hold a fish for a photo by its gills!!! Its chance to survive will be smaller!

4. Dont use a keep net!!!!! The net hurts the fish and fish can die if it gets too
crowded! It will kill one large fish in a small keep net if you hold it for too long!!!

5. Work as fast as possible with the unhooking, weighing and photo shoots and get
the fish in the water as fast as possible

6. Dont use oversized hooks, expecially with carp as they have very small mouths

7. Don't throw your fish back in the water! Gently walk in with the fish and place it
in the water. Hold the fish for a moment and clean it up. Take its tail and drag
it backward gently so that water can refill the gills and let it swim away

8. Hold a bass by the gap near its mouth and get your hands wet before handling
the fish otherwise you can remove certain oils and stuff helping it survive!!!

Safety note

Always keep your fish safe! work as fast and as careful as possible with the fish! Never use keepnets! Always use landing mats! See your big one swim back safely and go home with a smile on your face and remember they always get bigger!!

How to bring the fish in!!! Part 1 ( carp, catfishl, mudfish and yellowfish)

Improve your landing success rate!

First of all one of the most incorrect things you can do is catching fish (carp, catfish, yellowfish and mudfish) with a policeman and a tight drag and strike when the policeman shoots up! When you cast in and put your rod on the stand always losen up your drag. Always let the fish take some line and then strike! You will land more fish and set the hook more securely in the fish's mouth. A few of my friends catch the tight drag way and they tend to loose more fish then me. And its more fun because you dont have to watch your rod all the time you can just chat along with your CO- fisherman and wait to hear your drag going wild!!! Or you can get an alarm type policeman as pro-anglers often use. When the fish takes some line it will make an alarming noise, but it isnt that necesary if your reel makes a hard noise. When you're camping and sitting in a tent and you can't hear your drag then it will be a bit of a help!!

Another tip when catching carp, mudfish and yellowfish is to not strike too hard as the fish will take your line and its head wil be turned. If you just pull up your rod slightly and stop the line the fish's head wil turn and the hook will set! It happens many times that when you strike too hard you pull the hook straight out of the fish's mouth or often just hook it through a small piece of skin resulting in a get-away.

When catching barbel you have to strike a bit harder as a barbel's mouth is a bit harder than other fish but stiil do not take the rod and jump backwards pulling the rod in behind your back!! When catching barbel you obviously use bigger hooks than when catching carp, mudfish and yellowfish as the barbel has a far bigger and harder mouth! Thats why you stiil have to strike softly as bigger hooks are far more easier to hook a fish, but never use large hooks on fish with small mouths!!

When catching barbel and using hard meat or any other hard bait always remember to keep a big space open for the hook to stick out as it is easy to miss- hook the fish completely as in when you catch carp with softer baits, example floats, the hook still sets in correctely! Or when catching carp with boilies or tigernuts a hair rig would be helpful because tigernuts and boilies are larger and harder than other bait and only a bit of the hook would be exposed!!

When you strike don't turn your drag completely tight after that! Tighten it up a bit so the fish can still take some line when he pulls too hard!! If its a big fish it can easily snap your line!!! And you dont want that!!! So always keep your drag a bit loose. Even a small fish that's size is less than your line strength, can break your line if there is a weak spot in your line!! So even if your fish is small keep your drag loose!!!

Always keep your rod held up high and keep your line tight!! The fish can snap your line very easily if its slack!! When your line is slack reel in fast and get it tight!!!
Always be patient when catching a fish; dont just strike as hard as you can, with a tight drag and reel in as fast as you can!!! TAKE THE MOMENT AND ENJOY IT!!

So remember : 1. Strike GENTLY when the fish pulls your drag - 2. Tighten your drag a bit but not completely - 3. Keep your rod held up high - 4. Let the fish run when it wants to, allow it to pull your drag, - 5. Keep your line tight at all times - 5. Net the fish!!!! Try this and I am 100% sure you will land more fish!!

How to bring the fish in!!! Part 2 ( bass and tillapia-kurper)

There are numerous ways to bring in a bass or tillapia, but more or less the same principles are used than in part 1. When catching bass you reel in and while you reel in you use other tactics, example dropshot or the tecnique when using topwater lures etc, you do this 98% of the time! With tillapia you use this 50% of the time, mainly with spinners! When cast and reel in you still, like in part!, have to loosen your drag a bit so that when the fish puts to much presure on your line he will pull your drag!! Many people think when catching bass and tillapia it is not necesary to loosen your drag, but they are wrong!!!

Bass and Kurper are not ground feeders and will strike at your lures/bait! Bass have large mouths, smallmouth bass too!! So always use a large hook!! Tillapia usually have small mouths so don't use too large hooks!! They strike hard and when they do you must be ready to strike!! The same rule counts as in part 1 : Don't strike too hard!! IT ALREADY STRIKES YOU HARD!!!! You still have to strike a bass bit harder than with carp, but when you catch tillapia with a spinner you can strike gentley as a spinner I have noticed some people don't strike at all, they just start to reel in!!! When I was still a rookie with bass I too Just gave a half pathetic strike and I have lost more fish than I do today! The same is in part 1 : When you strike let the fish take some line when he pulls too hard!! If its a big fish it can easily snap your line!!! But other than in part 1 You can strike directely after it strikes a then you can let it take line when it wants!!

Fishermen intend to be over exited when a fish strikes they are not patient!!!! And rushes the fish in!!! They intend to loose fish easier so ENJOY IT!!! BE PATIENT!!!!

Same as in part 1 keep your line tight and rod held up high!!!!

Another way to catch bass(1%) and tillapia(50%) is with earthworms. The same principles count the same with the above the only alternitive is you can put your rod on the ground and you mostly use a floating line!!! Another way to catch bass is with small live bait (1%)

So remember : 1. Strike GENTLY when the fish strikes at you - 2.Get your drag right - 3. Keep your rod held up high - 4. Let the fish run when it wants to, allow it to pull your drag, - 5. Keep your line tight at all times - 5. Net the fish!!!! Try these tips and see what happens!!

Bass seasonal behaviour

Where to find bass in each season

At the end of summer when the temprature starts to drop, bass tend to move to shallower waters to feed. The shallows hold bass in early autumn for late feeding. The bass tend to school up and stay around nearby structure. After spawning season, big bass will head to deeper waters, you will find small bass in the shallows. Spawning usually starts when the water tempreture hits 55 degrees. Bass tend to hang around structure and fishing sabmerged trees and jetties will be very successfull. As the water tempreture starts to warm up, bass will move into shalower water of around 10-15 feet. Some of the most productive fishing can be done in the pre-spawn in the late afternoon as the water is very warm and the fish starts to become very active. During the spawning season bass do not move very far. The key now is to put your lure right in the fish's face. In summer the bass tends to be very aggressive, but in autumn and winter they slow up, your lure action should then also slow up. When fishing in winter, a boat and fishfinder would be very usefull as bass are deeper located in winter. Present your lure straight in the fishes face. In summer, baitfish-like lures and baby bass lures will work very good, but in winter or cold conditions it wont work so great. In winter use other natural looking baits or natural food sources like lacostes. Also remember to fish deep. After a warm rain, bass may go into a feeding frenzy, so be prepared for that. Do not be afrais of wind. Bass tend to feed in wind blowing currents,so it's easy to find fish.

Bass : Dropshot fishing and fishing thick vegetation

type=text

Dropshot fishing is one of the most effective ways to land big bass ecpesially in summer time. When it is summer time bass tend to be in deeper, colder water and their are targeting bait moving in off the bottom of the watersystem. Depending on the bass's behaviour, dropshot fishing can be fished fast or slow. When bass are active and when the water is warm, you can work your bait with a fast action but when they are inactive and when the water is cold, lure presentation becomes very important. you have to have a slow retrieve and 'present' the lure to the bass. Dropshot fishing is basically dropping your bait to the bottom of the lake, or just beneath where bass are feeding, and working your lure upwards with a jerking action caused by wrist movement. When dropshot fishing the dropshot rig obviously works best, as shown above on bass rigs. If bass are inactive you can also fish weightless for a slower action, especially in shalower water when you don't have to drop your lure to deep. A great place for dropshot fishing is at sudden, steap drop-offs. You are almost certainly gonna hook a bass. Dropshot fishing also works great between vegetation and timber. (Trees and logs in water) When your using a fishfinder and you spot underwater structure that would be a great place to target bass through dropshot fishing. Great softbaits to use for bass fishing is grubs, straigt worms, tubes and soft jerkbaits like flukes etc.

Dropshot fishing between vegetation : When dropshot fishing between thick grass or any other vorms of vegetation you should fish with a weedless rig. A weedless rig is basically covering the hook with your bait so that it doesn't get stuck between the vegetation. You could drop you lure in the thickest grass without getting stuck. When fishing feedless you can fish a far greater area of water. And bass love vegetation because there are tons of baitfish and insects in the vegetation, their are loads of oxygen and it is a great place for bass to use as an ambush point. Also use a small weight to break through the vegetation.

Other methods when fishing between vegetation : Topwaterlures work good above thick grass and lillypads, espacially frog poppers and especially on lillypads. The hooks are covered so you wont snagg on vegetation. Something that works even better than frogpoppers are the new snake lures designed by Dough Hannon, The bass professor. Watch the video on snake lures and you'll see for yourself! When topwater fishing, bass will slam you from underneath and this is the most exciting ways to catch bass. Your hart goes racing when a bass slams you from beneath. Another tactics that works is using a shallow diving cranckbait and then fishing between and alongside vegetation. As I said, Bass use the vegetation as an ambush point and wait for baitfish to swim by! A jighead with a fly or curlytail will also be effective in vegetation.

Bass pitching and flipping

How to have a silent landing in the water

Pitching and flippin works best when bass are inactive. When fish are inactive they have a very small strike zone, that is why lure presentation is very essential. Flippin is beter for muddy, mecrcy water and thick cover and pitching works best in clean, clear water. Great baits to pitch with are jigs and tubes, but creature baits, like brusshogs, andstraight worms also works.

Pitching :
Pitching is a very simple and silent way of presenting your lure to the fish. Pitching works best when your targets are 10-30 feet away.
Use a single hook lure, like jigs, tubes etc. Face your target, then let out lin euntil your lure is even with your reel. Hold your lure in your free hand. Let your rod tip point to your target on the water. Use your wrists and generate a quick, smooth and fast action, swinging the rod tip forward. Release the lure as it moves beneath your rod tip, and the continue lifting your rod tip. (With a baitcaster you can control the distance the lure moves with your thumb) Stop the lure just before it hits your target and you will get a smooth and silent landing.

Flipping :
Is great for pin-point accuracy. Flip ping works great in an area of 10-20 feet. Flipping is all in the wrists, just like in pitching. Let out line of about 14/15 feet. With your free hand, hold the line between your fingers Take your free hand to the side. The distance between your lure and the rod tip should be about 6-8 feet. Hold your arm (arm in which you are holding your rod) straight out, with the line still between your fingers. With a smooth wrist action, swing your lure closer to your body and swing it back out again and let it glide out between your fingers. Hold your rod tip up as you feed line with your free hand.

Take note : It is all in the wrists!

ACTION!!!!

Bass eat living creatures!!! Dont just reel in!!!

More on Carp!!

Carp love numerous baits!! Carp are bottom feeders and the suck their food up from the ground!! That's way carp love natural baits like earthworms, corn, nuts and baits like tigernuts, boilies, floats, as they look like a natural food source!! Nowadays plastic baits in the form of natural food sources are made!! But carp still come for food, and they can be caught on fly or when using a floating line with earthworms or even other baits like floats!! But carp are caught 90% of the time on the bottom of a water source !! Carp are mostly caught on fly in rivers where the water isn't deep and there is a stream in the water!!

When you catch carp, 50% of the time your drag pulls a little bit and stops and the your line gets slack, Carp swim in schools and feed on the bottom, they pick up your bait and when this happens your drag gets pulled. They let go of the bait and swim around to pick up other bait, Another fish or the same fish comes and sucks up the bait and your drag gets pulled a little again and they let go of your bait again!! It goes on like this till they find the bait safe and then they pick up the bait and swim away and they do not let go!! When this happens and your drag gets pulled for longer you have to strike!! Never strike if the fish just picks it up and let go!! Strike when the drag gets pulled faster and further and longer!!

But in some occasions the fish picks up the bait and pulls your drag fast and longer from the beginning!! And then you must strike!! It is most of the time the bigger fish who pick up and ran or shall I say swim!! It depends in which dam or river you fish at!!

Carp aren't really caught on artlures but you find there are a few carp caught on stuff like crankbaits, spinners etc but that doesn't happen often as carp are not gamefish!! Carp do eat smaller fish but only like really small baby fish!! And you can catch them on a small piece of a chicken or other meat!!

Best Carp Baits

There are a great varieties of baits to use for carp around the world. The most popular baits are without a doubt boilies and tigernuts. In SA I am most successful with floats. Another bait I find great, and it is great to use for any fish is earthworms because it is a natural bait. Carp baits:

Tigernuts
Boilies
Floats
Earthworms
Gummies
Marshmellos
bread and dough
Piece of very small meat
Pellets
Maize (corn)
Peas
Maggots
Plastic baits like small plastic carrots, peas etc.
Crickets
Other worms, like caterpillars
Carp also wont mind a few jellytots or jellybeans
Ground baits are also used to attract the carp
Many other carp baits are used worldwide

There are also all sorts of dips and flavors to use for your bait for an extra touch

The art of enjoying fishing!!

If you don not enjoy fishing you should stop rite now!! That is what fishing is all about! The are many ways you can enjoy fishing!! It is always better to go fishing with some mates or family and having some company!! If you have a child and take him fishing you will enjoy the fishing just as much as he does and when he catches a fish your smile would be just as wide as his!!

It is also fun to tour around your country and fishing at different dams or rivers with your friends and having a braai alongside the water with a few beers! Now what can be more fun then that! And you always have the bonus of catching that big one! Never just go fishing for the biggest fish and to compete cause then it is not going to be as fun as just chilling at the waters and being patient and bonding with your friends and family!

“Enjoy your fishing!!!! Without enjoyment there is no use!!! Let your children enjoy it”

Best time to catch kurper (Tilapia) and with what bait???

When catching tilapia it is very important to know what seasons to catch them and in what tipe of climate! Tilapia begin being active at the end of spring near the beginning of summer right through the whole summer. They are mostly caught in the middle parts of summer. Spinners, small cranks and earthworms are the number one baits to use! It is merely impossible to catch it with something else, but a small worm on a jighead can also work if you target a tilapia on close range and it will only bite if it feels threatened by your bait, it is then very important to hide away from the fish so that it doesn't spot you and swim away. Crankbaits are also more suited for rivers. You don't easily catch tilapia on cranks in SA. In the Okavango and Zambezi river in Botswana and upper parts of southern Africa tilapia are regularly caught on cranks. Tilapia Spesies mainly caught on rapalas are 3 Spot bream, Nembwe, and Pink Happy etc. They love hot weather and hot water!! That is why it is very difficult to catch Tilapia in the winter and on overcast cold days. In my opinion the best time is in SA is January and February Summer is the best time to catch tilapia. A good time to catch is also just after they bred and start getting active!!

When catching in warmer waters the fish will be more active and spinners would be the best bait. And when catching in colder water they will be less active and earthworms would be a good choice. Kurpers are very fun to catch and they put up a strong fight. Tilapia are almost always in or near their nest. Tilapia are also very smart fish and if you see one close by do not just thing you can cast behind him and catch him! Hide behind a bush or stand back so that the fish doesn't spot you and the cast. I was hiding from my Israeli Tilapia and trying to catch it for more than an hour, but it paid of for being patient!!! When targeting tilapia in their nests, small plastic worms on a jigheid wil work good, aswell as earthworms. Try and irratate the fish, and chaches are great you'll get hook! Be patient!!!

Tilapia baits

Create your own fishing lures!

type=my own lures

Don`t you get frustrated everytime you lose an expensible fishing lure? Do you have a cramped budget? Than create your own fishing lures! It is very easy and very fun! It is also great to land a fish using your own lure. It does not take a lot of time and it costs almost nothing. If you lose it you can simply create a new one. you don`n need a lot of equipment or tools. All the lures I create is made out of wood. I only used a small knife and sandpaper. I just started cutting away a basic design and as I went on the lure got some shape. I just finished it of with sandpaper. It is that easy. Try and get some nice, soft wood to work with. You can make surface lures, like poppers, or diving lures, like crankbaits. You can then add eyes, feathers, propellers etc. to your lure.

A few freshwater fish species

Specimen Carp Angling

1) Tackle

type=textSpecien carp angling is the way to go to catch bigger carp. The idea of specimen carp angling is that you target big carp specifically. You catch less but much bigger. Specimen carp angling is al about patience. When catching with floats, normal maize, maggots etc. any size carp can pick up your bait. But with specimen carp angling, you use larger baits, lig big boilies, tigernuts etc. to prevent small fish from picking up your bait. But a big part of specimen angling is catch and release. (always use the above safety tips) Big carp need to be released back in the water. But don't be fooled you can catch big carp with small baits aswell, because a big carp will eat your floats aswell. But the problem is there's more small carp swimming in big schools, so the chance is better they'll reach your bait first.

Tackle needed for specimen carp angling.
Rod : Obviously you need a bigish rod when targetting big carp. 11 to 12 feet rods are excellent, but don't go to big. A flexible rod is also more fun. It shouldn't be to stiff or to flexible. You need a little backbone when trying to pull the carp away from snags. Good rod brands are sensation adrenalin, shimano and daiwa.

Reels : Reels with larges spools wil work. Always be sure to have your spool full in line. You will have to let the carp run and therefore you need a lot of line. Baitcasters rods are best suitet for any carp angling. You basically have two drag systems. You set your normal, top, drag beforehand and then on the bottom of the reel there's a clip or a bottom drag. Clip this over after you casted so that the fish can make a run when it picks up your bait. Don't let it to loose otherwise it will overwind. The 'bottom drag' is looser than the normol one. As soon as you start to reel in the clip clips over and your normal drag kicks into play. The great thing about the 2 way drag system is that you don,t have to set your drag after you strike, you can set it before hand. Shimano have great baitrunners for specimen carp angling, you can't go wrong there!

Line : Line needed for specimen angling must be thick and strong because you will catch bigger carp. Use line of 12 to 16kg (26 to 35pounds)
Don't go above 45 pounds, because it still needs to be a challenge. Use thin, strong line because carp can see thick line underwater.

Take note : Don't go to cheap, you need strong and reliable tackle when specimen carp angling.

And remember : Before buying any new tackle, buy a landing/unhooking mat and big landing net, weigh your fish inside the net, not by its gills, or preferably in a weighing mat.

A remarkeble catch!!!!!

Specimen Carp Angling

Baits for the monsters

type=text

Now your set with all the necassary tackle. You've got all the gear but still no idea. Whats next? When practising Specimen Carp angling it is essential to use the correct bait. Specimen carp angling is all about targeting bigger fish and to keep those small buggers from getting hooked. That is why you have to use much larger bait. Small floats and maize wont do. The 2 most succesfull specimen carp angling baits are tigernuts and boilies. Try and find yourselve the biggest tigernuts and boilies you can get. If you go out and still catch smaller fish than you preffer, use two or more boilies/tigernuts on a rig. Maize can also work if you rig a whole cluster of maize. Boilies revelotionised fishing today and it is regarded as the best bait to land monster carp with all over the world, the UK, Romania, France, Marocco, South Africa etc. Specimen carp angling in SA and the USA is fairly new, so if your an American try it out as soon as possible and suprise a couple of your mates with some astonashing carp.

Specimen Carp Angling Baits

Specimen Carp Angling

Ground feed

Making a ground feed a few days before you go fish is a vital part of Specimen Carp Angling. Feeding a certain spot in the dam where you are going to fish will lure plenty of fish to your bait. Your ground feed consits out of normal feed, made from corn, you can buy in shops mixed with nuts, seeds, boilies, tigernuts, maize(corn) and other particles. When preparing your ground feed you can use up to 5kg of mixed feed. A canoe, rubberduck or any form of a boat will make it easier for you to make a ground feed. You must just remember (get a target) where you prepared the feed and when you go fish, you must drop your lines in the ground feeded area. There will be plenty of fish feeding in a circle around your bait. That is why it is important to have big baits on your hook, because the big carp wil confront your bait sometime. You just have to keep the small ones away. Sometimes, the really big carp, over 20kg, will hang around just behind your feeded area, waiting for the small fish to stop feeding. You can then drop another line 10meters further than the other ones with minimal feed. (Present even bigger baits)

Specimen Carp Angling : Hair rig

One of the most important aspects of specimen carp angling is the hair rig. The hair rig was first used by two british anglers wanting to rig big baits and still get a good hook-up. The came up with the idea of attaching big baits to a hook by using a hair. The hair rig brought great succes, and a new demension was brought to carp angling. Nowadays boilies and tigernuts are attached to hooks by braided line. While using a hair rig the hook is completely open and you wil get a solid hook-up 9 times out of ten. You can also use larger baits aswell as more baits. Another positive that the hair rig brings to play is that normally with a normal baited hook, when a carp blows/spits out your bait you don't get a hook-up. When fishing with a hair rig you wil hook the fish even when he 'rejects' your bait and tries to blow it out. If you don't fish with a hair rig you can forget practising specimen carp angling,

Unodinarily huge monsters!!

Things to do on a boring fishing day

On a day when the weather is bad and the fish simply do not bite things can become a bit boring especially when fishing for one day at a place where it is not to beautiful and when you can not enjoy the beautiful nature!

Top 10 fish species

My fishung bucket list

These are the te fish species I would like to catch the most before I die.
  • 10) The Vampire fish
The Vampire fish is a prehastoric fish with the teeth of a vampire. Vampire fish do not grow that large, but it is an iconic fish to land. The top destination to target the Vampire Fish is in the Amazon river.
  • 9) Freshwater Stingray
This is a colossal beast, growing over 300kg (rumours of 500kg+) It looks basically like a saltwater stingray and also has a venomous barb. Thailand is the best place to catch these monsters.
  • 8) The Redtail Catfish
The Redtail Catfish is one of the prettier catfish in the water. It has yellow colouring and a beautiful red tail. It grows well over 60kg and the best place to catch them is the Amazon River.
  • 7) The goonch
The goonch is a monsterous catfish, with a mouth full of teeth. It grows over 100kg and is a strong fighter. The top destination to fish for Goonch is in India.

The Welsh catfish is a large catfish growing up to 150 kg. The fish is found in waters in Europe. (Italy, Wales, Spain, Germany etc)

  • 1) Now it is time to pronounce my most wanted fish. IT IS NOTHING ELS THAN THE GREAT WHITE STURGEON!! :
This is another prehastoric monster with fins. It is one of the biggest, if not the biggest freshwater fish species in the world. My Big One That Got Away

We all have a few big fish that get away. So do I! There are two big ones I lost that got me banging my head hard!!

It was a sunny afternoon and I am catching with two of my mates! We landed a nice couple of bass that day! I just caught a 2.2 kg bass with a watermelon fluke before I changed my bait to a large brown brushog. Just after I had change my bait I got a huge strike out of nowhere!! I stupidly forget to loosen my drag and the fish nearly put my face first in the water! I quickly loosened my drag and the fish gave me another pull almost in to the water! The fish took line at a great speed and my rod almost bent to the ground!! The fish swam down and suddenly it got stuck in grass and I couldn't bring it in! My mate was in the water and said he would get the fish loose. He swam do the bottom and came back up and jokingly said he is to scared to get it it is not a fish it is a crocodile!! My other mate swam in and just kept my rod still! He swam to the bottom and then suddenly the line just snapped!! Just like that! There must of been a weak place in the line and it snapped!! I was so pissed!

Me my father and my two brothers went camping alongside a river for a weekend with nice size carp in it! When we reached the river we discovered the current was to strong and we wouldn't catch anything here. we drove to a tackle shop and asked the owner for some nice places to go fishing in the area! He told us about this place where there are a few dams with carp, barbel, bass, kurper and grass carp. We decided to go check it out. Before even unpacking me and my brother went to go trough all the dams with a spinner. We were looking for some kurper and bass! At this one dam we instead saw loads of really small carp! I had a big spinner on and quickly put a smaller one on to try my luck and see if I can maybe catch a carp with a spinner. I quickly made a knot, not a strong one, cause I knew I wasn't going to catch a carp. After I got no luck I went to this really small dam just above the previous one. I had 5 meters place in catching the fish due to a small island in the middle. My brother told me I would never get a good fight in this small area! I casted in About 6 meters to the side (right) next to a small bush sticking out of the water! With my second throw I got a huge strike with the fish striking so hard that my line ended up ^ meters on the left side!!! Me drag was loose and everything going great! I was then fighting the fish in 5 meters space with one of my best fights in my life! It just took line and went deep! I tightened my drag up a bit but still the fish took line at an enormous speed!! After about 10 to 15 minutes with the fight going nowhere my brother called my father to bring the net along! Just as my brother told my father what is going, the fish got of! My knot broke!!!! I remembered making that knot so fast and not giving attention and making a weak knot, how silly of me!! I only I had given some attention to my knot I would have landed a huge fish! What a fight!! We found out that there were only grass carp and blou kurper in the dam!! So all you fishermen remember this : Always give some attention to your knots and do not rush it of like I did, or you will lose some fish just like I did!

Quarry fishing tips

When fishing at a quarry the water is very deep and the bottom is rocky. It is very difficult catching with your bait in the ground. You can almost never catch with a sinker cause it is going to get stuck in the rocky bottom! When fishing for barbel you can take a piece of meat and put it on the hook without a sinker. You can than drop the line 5 meters before you and let it sink to the bottom! The chances are always there of getting stuck bit it doesn't happen often! You can always catch with a floating line and a good trick is to tie your line onto a plastic bottle, You can tie the line but still let the line hang 2 to 5 meters or even more in the water and also cast in about 10 to 20 meters. A fun thing to do when the fish aren't that big is to catch with a really small rod and a 3kg barbel will give a good fight and it is loads of fun! If your catching carp you can use earthworms and a floating line as the carp will come up occasionally to get food, but carp are bottom feeders. It is fun going to a quarry for a few hours for some sports with a light rod!! It is also fun pulling the fish up directly below you!!

Great fishing spots ruined!!!

Something that caught my attention over the past couple of years is the ruining of great fishing spots over the world by the municipality! There are now many, many dams all over the closed by the municipality and some dams you can not go fishing there and only have a picnic, butt still you have to have a permit! That is something I do not want to stand for! I can not take it when 'the people' come and take over and close some off our great fishing spots! When me and my family go out and explore some of the best dams in our country or province with stories of huge fish caught there a couple of years ago and we arrive there and hear the dam is closed and you can not catch there anymore I just want to scream my longs out! How can they do that! Closing the beautiful nature with no good reason! They should be more focused on crime and not on the closing of our dams! over the years more and more dams become illegal to use!

Another thing that irritates me is fishing permits! Sometimes you drive a really long way and when you finally reach your destination and then you hear you have to have fishing permits! What I also hate about some fishing spots is when they tell you you can not catch and release because there are to many of that species in the dam/river! They also say if they catch you catch and release you get a fine for every fish you released! I would never let my big one just die!! I want too see him swim back safely to the deeper waters! Why would you want to kill an animal you brings you pleasure! I think that rule must be banned Replie please on this matter and share your opinion with me and everyone els. Why can't you just go to a dam, unpack, rig up, catch a few fish and hang out with your mates???

Wonderful Camping!

It is great waking up very early in the morning and getting everything ready and finishing all the packing for the camping trip! Camping is great, but camping alongside a dam or river with a few rods is even better! What is better than waking up early in the morning in a tent when the sun rises and getting a early cup of coffee?? You get to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, the bonding with family and friends, the noises of animals late night and early morning, the chilling and getting rid of all your stress, but most of all while doing all this and catching a few fish in the process!! Camping isn't camping without your best friend!! (your fishing rod). When camping you usually unpack everything and get the tent ready. We usually get the lines in the water before even starting with the tent! Mostly kids think their fathers take them for a camping trip so that they can have fun, but fathers appreciate the camping just as much as kids or even more! That is mostly because they are under stress and they forget about everything when being away from home and work! The thing that also makes camping special besides the fishing is laying next to a fire on a blanket and looking up at the stars and telling a few stories! So next time before checking into a guest house for the weekend check camping out and don't remember forget the rods!!

Trying out some new spots!!

One important thing about fishing is to always try out some new dams or spots next to rivers! any dams example public dams, farm dams, abandoned dams an any other dams you see next to the road. I discovered dams with quality fish in it by just site searching with my family! Its always good to just take a stroll one day in your car searching for dams or checking on maps for nearby dams and then go fishing at that dams! You never know, you might just find a dam with your future PB in it! If me and my family haven't tried out and searched for new spots, I wouldn't have caught nearby as many big ones as what I have caught up to today! Don't just go fishing at a public dam known for many fish each weekend. It is fun to explore and find out new destinations to land you big one!

So next time when you plan to go fishing don't just go to a common dam with many anglers! Do some research and try out some new spots!

Dropping of standards at your favorite fishing spots

What do you think about the great dams closing up ans prohibited by the municipality and no fishing signs popping up everywhere you go! What is your view on the catch and kill rule and fishing permits. Please share how you feel on this and what you think of it!

Wonderful fishing information. I really enjoyed some of your stories and admire your catch and release practice. My son is an avid fisherman, he very rarely keeps any either. He also feels strongly about saving those fish for another adventure, with another fisherman on another day! Great lens! Linda (Lensrolling this to my ice fishing lens and gifts for the fishermen.)

You've built an excellent fishing lens here. Especially figuring you are only 14 years old. However, isn't that a bit young to be drinking beers? Or are the "drinking" laws different in South Africa?

    Keep Fishing!
