Check list
Things you need to get up and running fast.
- Boat, either new or second hand
- Fishing Rod, and reel
- Life Jacket
- Fishing licence (very important)
- Lures and bait
- Gaff or something to handle the fish you catch
- Kosh, might keep something for the table
- A good place to launch
- A paddle
Stuff in/on my boat
A fishingski is a small craft that is paddled through the surf so there is a good chance that you will capsize or be thrown from your boat and sometimes your boat will be washed up onto shore upside down and full of water, that is why all your equipment must be securely tied down and things that can't get wet must be in put into waterproof containers. You have been warned!!
- Three rods sometimes four: One flick stick with a Dawia firewolf reel on ideal for casting spoons at fish feeding on the surface. A stiffer rod designed for the fishingski with a penn500 on it (perfect for those big couta), the other with an alvey reel which is a very versatile reel as it can be used for both trolling and bottom fishing. Depending on the weather and how I feel a fly rod.
- Rope with a Velcro loop, it is ideal for tying up on shark nets or another boat.
- Waterproof Tackle box - Check "stuff in my tackle box" to see what is inside.
- Waterproof tube for cell phone and car keys. An old flare canister work very well.
- Gaff
- Kosh
- Hook remover
- Safety equipment (nothing at the moment)
- A life jacket that I usually take off after I have paddled through the surf.

It is best to have a waterproof container otherwise you will have to wash your equipment after each trip. Saltwater loves to eat metal!
- Yo-Zuri traces to catch live bait either at a wreck or when the fish are shoaling.

- Sinkers they are used to attach to the uzri trace and to get the lures to run deeper.
- Elastic bands - used to attach the sinkers to the fishing line, this is done so that when the fish takes the lure the sinker breaks off.
- Couta traces - this is for when you catch some live bait you can put it on live to catch the bigger fish. Some will have skirts on some won't.
- Spoons - Ideal for a flick stick in case you come across some fish feeding on the surface.

Definitions
When you absolutely have to know what you are talking about.
- Yo-Zuri: A line about 2 meters long with about 6 perpendicular lines coming off of it, each of those have a small hook and a small plastic squid on them. It is used to catch bait fish mackerel, sardines and Shad etc.
- Halco Lures: A brightly colored plastic fish that is trolled behind a boat. It wobbles and rattles in the water attracting the big fish.
- Couta Trace: A metal trace with on single hook and two treble hooks on it. The single hook is attached through the mouth of the bait fish and the trebles are attached down the side of the bait fish.
- Skirt: A plastic brightly colored squid threaded onto your lure, can be use on its own or with bait.
- Spoon: I shiny piece of metal with a hook on it attached to your line. It is usually casted and retrieved so the fish will think it is a smaller fish fleeing the scene.
- Fishingski: A craft made of fiberglass about 4m long and 700 mm wide paddled out to sea and used to catch fish. It can be used in freshwater. A bit like a kayak.
- Live bait: A live small fish attached to a big hook or two, used to catch a bigger fish.
- Trace: A length of wire or nylon with one or more hooks attached to it, so the fishes teeth don't bite through the main line.
- Troll: A term used when you drag your lures behind your boat either with an outboard or paddling.
- Gaff: I stick with a large hook on one end, this is used to get the fish out of the water and into your boat hatch.
- Hatch: A compartment in you boat to store your fish and tackle so they don't get washed overboard.
- Kosh: Very much like a small baseball bat. It is used to kill the fish, nothing more dangerous than a fish flapping around the deck with sharp teeth and some hooks flying around.
- Hook remover: This is a strong short piece of wire with a small loop on one end and a handle on the other. The loop is hooked around the hook and given a quick jerk to remove the hook without having to put your hands in a mouth full of sharp teeth.
- Flick Stick: A fishing rod used for casting lures, it is more flexible allowing you to flick your lures further.
