What qualities make the best fish oil capsules?

Science is the key here. Science tells us which fish have the highest levels of omega 3s, where to find them, how to select them, how to process them, and how much our body needs to maintain optimum health.

If you stick to the science behind fish oil capsules then all the slick marketing in the world won't fool you.

Even the best known brands - the ones that are advertised on television and on infomercials - with all their doctors, testimonials, special offers and implied features won't hold up to the facts of science.

Fish With The Highest Amounts of Omega 3s

Your fish oil should come from fish with the highest amount of natural omega 3 fatty acids.

What fish are those?

Salmon
Tuna
Sardines
Anchovies
Herring

How Do You Know What's In Your Fish Oil Capsules?

If your fish oil capsules do not list specific species of fish used as the source, stop taking it immediately. Why? Because you have no idea what's in it!

When a label just says "fish oil" or "marine lipids" you're really taking a chance with your health. Since different fish have different amounts of omega 3s, if the manufacturer cannot guarantee the exact species of fish used to make the oil, how in the world can they tell you how much omega 3 your getting?

I don't know about you, but that's too many unanswered questions about something they expect me to put in to my body!

What Else Should You Know?

Okay, so let's say you find fish oil capsules that list the specifies of fish used to make the oil. Is there anything else to watch out for?

Yes. You'll also need to be sure the manufacturer is willing to put in writing that all of the fish used to make the oil are health screened for human consumption.

Think about that for a minute. If they're not willing to give you that reassurance in writing, what exactly are they putting in their product? Could they possibly be using the cheaper, unhealthy fish that haven't passed the health screening criteria that all fish are subject to before being sold for humans to eat?

I'll let you draw your own conclusions on that one!

How Are The Fish Processed?

Because fish are full of more than just fish oils, the way they are processed is very important. To minimize the likelihood of contaminants and hidden vitamin A and D, you'll want fish oil capsules from a manufacturer that presses their fish oil from only the flesh of the fish.

Did you really want fish heads, tails and guts in your fish oil? I didn't think so.

Get What You're Paying For

Finally, you need to make sure you're getting what you're paying for. Nature shows us and science confirms that omega 3s do us the most good when they're balanced - just like they would be naturally.

Science also tells us that all eight members of the omega 3 family are vitally important to our health.

Most people have heard of the 3 most famous omega 3s - ALA, EPA and DHA. But, the other 5 - SDA, ETA(3), ETA, HPA and DPA are just as important. And when the whole family is present, they're more powerful and beneficial to your health than just getting any one or two individual omega 3s.

Does your fish oil capsule contain all 8 omega 3's. Does the manufacturer put the information right on the label?

Last, But Not Least

The last thing you want to check is that there are no hidden or unlabeled oils in your fish oil capsules. Not many people know to look for this, and it's one of the easiest ways for fish oil manufacturers to pad their pockets.

It's easy to check on this. Just add up the amounts of omega 3s in the product. It should equal the total amount in the product. If it doesn't, you're getting ripped off.
