The First thing you will need is an Aquarium. This is one of the most obvious pieces of equipment, but the improper selection of an aquarium for the fish is one of the leading causes of death for the fish.

Many people assume smaller assume smaller fish tanks are easier to take care of but it is in fact the larger aquariums that are easier to take care of. This is because fish produce a lot of waste, as does any other living thing, But this waste becomes harmful for this fish when it becomes concentrated. so if you think about it the more water you have in your tank, the easier it is to keep your fish healthy. So when deciding what size fish tank you want to keep, this is an important factor to remember.

The next thing is a stand. If you don't already have a place to put your aquarium you'll need a stand that best built for the type of aquarium you have. Water is heavy and when you place other fish tank supplies such as decorations, gravel and equipment, it becomes even heavier. So make sure you can find something that is made for the specific amount of weight you estimate your tank will be.

Next is a power filter, Any fish you get, you will need a power filtration unit. Most filtration units you see will be rated for at least whatever gallons of water your tank holds. any filter should work well with your tank as long as it circulates the water and provides three stages of filtration. The three stages of filter are mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration.

Thermometer and heater, These are important to keep fish tanks at the correct temperature. A water that is Too Warm or Too Cold can stress fish. so it's important to have a thermometer to monitor the water temperature as well as a heater to heat it if it gets too cold, just like us humans!

For the top of your tank you will need a lid. this will keep your fish from jumping out of the tank or even worse, a cat getting into it.
Most lids come with a built-in light for your fish these lights are nice for the fish because it provides daytime and nighttime simulation for the fish. And of course your fish and tank also look better with the proper lighting.

Test Kits are essential with your first tank as well as when you do the cycling process.
The test kits test water levels of Ph, nitrite, Nitrate, ammonia etc.
Basically you will want to keep these water levels constant and if you notice your fish getting sick, then you can use the kit to determine if the levels are off balance. this is allot cheaper than doing it at the store.

Air pumps are optional depending on what type of fish you have. some fish like to play in the bubbles, air pumps provide oxygen for the fish but any live plant will provide more oxygen for your tank than any air pump.

All the rest are your basic fish tank supplies such as Gravel, decorations, etc. I should note that some fish "like" decorations and caves to hide inside. so read up on the fish you decide to have.
