PTS Trainer and Coach - Ali Wilson

Hi, I'm a dictator. That means I will tell you what I want, and I expect it to get done. Most of the stuff I say is non-negotiable, so it's good idea to just do as I say. Some people will think that's a bit extreme, but luckily I don't care. A large percentage of trainers only do things that their clients want to do, or pander totally to their self-interest so as to keep the client happy but at the end of the day the trainer should know best. Trouble is, most trainers know next to nothing about training and health. I do know a fair bit, so I'm not going to take nonsense when I'm telling you what's best for you.

My background is academically engineering, but I use my training and knowledge in the area of human leverage instead of automotive design. My sport background is largely combat sports which I've trained in most of my life. I've competed in Muay Thai, San Shou, Judo and MMA.

Personal Training & Exercise Classes

One to One and Group Fitness Coaching

The PTS FacilityPrivate coaching sessions are your best opportunity to make you fitness goals a reality. Our highly experienced and qualified instructors will coach you to progressively strengthen your weaknesses and utilise your strength in order to perform better than you best in you sport, work and day to day life. Our clients range from amateur and professional athletes, strongmen & women, children, retired people and general folk who want to exercise, all with the common goal of wanting to improve them selves in one way or another. Our unique array of specialist equipment will keep you motivated and interested with constant variations of exercises to challenge your body and mind.

Our classes are not your normal generic fitness classes - we separate technical and non technical movement so that you can get the best strength and conditioning gains with minimising the risk of injury. Kettlebells is technical and uses one repetition movements on a range of weights to improve strength and muscle activation, Circuits is non-technical and involves pushing, pulling and banging various objects in order to build the muscular and cardiovascular conditioning. We also have boxing, kickboxing and wrestling classes that are just what they say in the tin - get straight stuck in learning and practising the skills for these areas of martial arts.

Strong Athlete Sessions & Strongman Training

We have a wide variety of strongman equipment that gets used by professional strongmen and also in our strong athlete sessions. Strongman training has become more popular with athletes from other sports in recent years, as the handling of the awkward objects adds an extra dimension to training that cannot be provided by standard barbells.

Our strong athlete group session is for anyone who fancies giving this kind of training a go. We use your own bodyweight as an indicator of what weights you should be attempting so that no-one gets excluded from any event.

Kettlebell Sessions & Training

Our kettlebell selection is something we are proud of: 8kg up to 64kg and at least two of each! We use the kettlebells to practice the best 'bang for buck' movements like cleans, squats, presses, swings and a few bonus movements like windmills and turkish get ups. We typically practice moves one rep at a time rather than do countless reps in one go, as this means each rep can be practised cleanly and is much safer with better transfer of skill. There is no need to make movements more 'adavnced', instead as you get stronger and develop better technique you will be to handle heavier kettlebells.

The benefits from training this way are many; increased strength, power, co-ordination and flexibility. Plus, it is good old fashioned hard work!

Circuit Sessions & Training

This is the ultimate 'met con' training! Metabolic conditioning is the term that has sprung up recently to replace 'fat burning'. The reason our class is so effective is simple; we keep it simple! All the activities included are as non-technical and unskilled as possible, meaning you only have to worry about keeping up the pace!

Tough Runner Group Session

Inspired by the extreme style of running events, our Tough Runner session combines the cardiovascular benefits of running with the fun and awesomeness of some more 'playground' style activities like crawling, monkey bars, leap frog and so on!

A great way to train hard and really enjoy yourself in a group environment!

Boxing Classes & Training

Our boxing class at PTS is not boxercise or aerobics with gloves on, but actual boxing skills. You will learn, develop and practice footwork, speed, accuracy, defence, stamina and other qualities! This is a mixed ability class with people ranging from current active fighters all the way to people who have never thrown a punch before, so don't be worried! You won't be made to do anything you're not comfortable with, but the opportunity is there if you want try something and get fitter while doing it!

Wrestling Classes & Training

Wrestling is awesome! Now I've got that out of the way, I need to explain that this isn't the weird fake wrestling with people screaming speeches at each other, rather it is the grappling aspect of wrestling. Takedowns, clinching, control, submissions, counters and defence to all these is drilled and practised.

Wrestling is unusual in the world of combat sports and martial arts because it is possible to train it quite hard with minimal risk. The benefits of this are important, like increased confidence in pulling off techniques against resisting opponents and the fitness that is derived from training hard!

Events & Competitions

At Progressive Training Systems we like to be active, and regularly participate in things that take our fancy. Races, events, shows and competitions in categories like running, strongman and the like. We also like to raise money for the charity KidsAid which is a local Northampton charity dealing with traumatised children.

Constantly entering or organising events helps keep everyone motivated to train, and gives people goals for their training. It also acts as a fantastic social outlet! We sometimes will do an event in our own way, like the time we decided to do the Northampton Run 10km whilst also carrying/dragging strongman weights around the course! We did come last, but we got the biggest cheers of the day! Our facebook page has a regularly updated calender of events we have an interest in so it's easy to keep tabs on us.

Pushing 75, I have to admit that I am slightly over the hill to try out these. You present a nice case for the younger lot to train on their physique.

Yes alot of the training that we present here can seem to be aimed at those already athletic in nature, however we train anybody. A big part of our philosophy is to train ALL people towards goals of being more athletic, it just that some people are closer to certain goals than others. It all depends on your levels of preparation towards wherever it is you want to go. I'm a big believer in training holistically, as you can't make consistent progress if you hurt yourself or compromise your health.
