Healthy, Happy and Fit After 50

As the boomer generation is quickly reaching the high side of fifty, most of us are expecting to live to 85 or 90 and plan to stay fit to enjoy those years as much as possible. However, the highest level of health and well being must also take into account our mental, emotional, spiritual and social situations as well as the physical.

Your best health is essential in all aspects of your life from your body, your friends to the environment around you. You have to start thinking of wealth not just in terms of money and property, but also in terms of mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well being.

In regard to mental health, the mind is the key to all aspects of your well being.

With the proper mental outlook, the poor can still be very happy with life. On the other hand, a pessimistic millionaire can be miserable with life no matter how much he possesses.

To maintain a positive mental outlook is definitely not easy in our world today, but those who can keep an optimistic attitude about things that directly affect them can remain much happier and healthier than those who always expect the worst.

Our emotions can lead us to act impulsively, so a high level of awareness in this area is important and essential to our well being. Relationships that take us many years to establish can be destroyed in one fit of temper.

Positive emotions like love, joy and compassion should be nurtured while negatives such as fear, anger and hate should be suppressed as much as possible. Controlling our emotions is not easy but the more we try to be aware of them as they start to form, the better we can be at managing them.

Negative emotions have been found to lead to illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, ulcers, depression and other ailments. Positive emotions on the other hand, seem to improve the immune system and lead to better health.

Of course, our physical well being is key to enjoying a healthy life. We should always try to get the needed rest, exercise and nutrition to maintain our bodies as well as possible.

If you can find a form of exercise you enjoy such as golf, tennis or pleasant walks, it makes life much easier. We all need exercise but its much harder to make a habit out of something you dread. Even short walks on a regular basis can keep you active and independent much longer.

Finally, don't overlook the importance of personal relationships. Whether its the love of your life, family or just close friends, appreciate, enjoy and nurture your bonds with others. As life comes close to an end its these relationships that seem to matter much more than personal possessions.

I hope these thoughts may make it easier to stay fit and healthy. Nobody said growing older would be easy, but I think most of us agree that it beats the alternative. With that in mind stay fit and enjoy the many years ahead as much as possible. If this information is useful for you you might also enjoy Friends Past Fifty

At Least Just Stay Active

Some of the exercise programs I have included here actually can make you look and feel younger, if you are willing and able to put in the necessary time and effort. I think its great that these experts have gone to the trouble to create plans that can make such dramatic improvement in the lives of those over fifty.

To get the best benefit you can from exercise, add some strength training if you are able. Strength training will keep you physically fit and able to do more later in life. Since we baby boomers should live long lives, we should do what we can to be able to enjoy life as long as possible.

However, there are many who aren't able or willing to commit the time or effort needed to completely change our bodies. But everyone can improve their health and enjoyment of life by simply becoming more active. I'm not talking about major life changes and exhausting workouts but simply getting out and walking on a regular basis, if that's all you feel you can do. Find somewhere you enjoy walking and even better do it with a friend or two.

You will be surprised at how many positive results you can realize. As you feel you can, walk a little farther. This is a great time of year to get out and take a hike and enjoy the outdoors.

The key is to do something you enjoy whether it is walking around the mall, hiking in the woods or mountains, playing golf or swimming. Just get more active. The more you do now, the more you will enjoy life later and your life will be longer. Your later years will be a lot happier, if you are fit enough to be active and make the most of your life.

Enjoy Rail Trails And Stay Fit

I know that all of us who are concerned about our health and trying to keep fit enjoy getting out when the weather permits for a nice walk or bike ride.

State and city parks provide many of us with pleasant and convenient places to get some exercise plus I've just become aware just how extensive the growth of "rail trails" has become.

The Rails-To-Trails Conservancy helps local communities convert unused railroads into recreational trails. Presently there are over 1,400 of these rail trails located around the U.S. to help us enjoy getting out.

These trails can range from 1 or 2 miles to nearly 200 miles and most are available for walking, biking and wheelchairs. Many of these trails are paved and provide amenities such as restrooms and water fountains.

Another major benefit for those who are elderly or somehow disabled is that these trails are all very level and wide for the most part. So even wheelchair bound or people needing walkers are able to enjoy these trails without over exerting themselves.

Its also a nice benefit when you are planning a trip to be able to find out what type of recreational trails will be in the area you plan to visit. The website www.TrailLink.com provides information on the location, condition, length and types of activity allowed on the various trails. There are even pictures provided of most trails.

I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised with the locations and facilities of these trails. Being able to enjoy exercise makes it a lot easier.

Have Fun This Fall And Shape Up For Winter

Its been a rough summer of dodging excessive heat, floods or wildfires for most of us but hopefully we'll have a pleasant fall as soon as the hurricanes pass. There's always something.

Fall is about to get here and with it should come some pleasant weather for us to get out and enjoy. I hope you'll also use it as an opportunity to get some extra exercise while having fun.

It will be a good time for mountain hikes, bike rides, golf or just long walks in the park. It is also a great chance for us boomers, seniors, old coots (or whatever you want to call yourself after 50) to improve our health and get in shape for a hard winter.

Another benefit from getting away to the mountains is that you can relax and walk off some of the tension we are all feeling from the crazy economy we are dealing with now. Refreshing your mind can be as beneficial to you as the physical exercise. Not to mention its another good excuse for the getaway.

This is no great revelation, but the experts are predicting a bad winter and the healthier we are going into it will make it easier to endure. At least we will be stronger to battle the colds or flu that will be lurking for us.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy the fall while getting some good exercise to stay fit. Every little bit helps.

Be Fit For Spring

It's a shame to get out to the park, golf course or start gardening as soon as the weather permits and injure yourself because joints have stiffened or become weak over the winter.

I have no pretense that you don't already know what I'm suggesting here. It is just meant as a friendly reminder to do a little tune up on yourself after being cooped in this winter.

I'm a senior plus I provide care for a parent whose health is very fragile. It amazes me how much a little exercise or stretching can improve her condition.

Stretching and enough exercise to avoid stiffness also makes me feel a lot more fit and healthy during the winter. I have to cater to my back and knees or they ambush me. From the number of seniors trying to break the land speed record everytime I go to the mall, I have a lot of company.

If you can go mall walking or just do some exercise in your home when you have time, it may help you be fit and ready for the things you really look forward to this Spring. Being over 50 doesn't mean we have to give up the activities we enjoy but it is important to put in some effort to stay fit enough to keep active.

These are things we all know we should do but something more important always seems to pop up. Don't pay the price for putting it off this year.
