Five Books on Cats every Human should have

It is no coincidence that I share a house with a person who tries to treat me well, and to understand me. My person attempts to expand her knowledge about cats in general and about me in particular - a difficult task for her at the best of times. It's not always easy for humans to grasp the first essential fact in our cross-species relationship.

The first essential fact - Cats are not people!

You may find it curious that I point out this blindingly obvious fact, but I am still surprised when I run across yet another person who insists on explaining my behaviour in human terms. There's an instinctual reason behind the actions of a cat. Understanding what these instincts are (and why I have them in the first place) will make you become a better cat owner. At the very least, my behaviour should make a lot more sense.

To assist you in your quest for understanding, I have taken careful note of your behaviour and concluded that you also have the highly developed trait of curiosity. I've learned that another skill of yours is reading, and that you're quite capable of picking up a lot from books.

Here then, is my list of my recommended books for you to read on feline psychology and overall cat care.

Being friends with other cats

We didn't always live here as a couple. Apart from the brood of younger humans who have now left to start their own broods, I had a friend named Joe. Mind you, we weren't always friendly as I was quite happy patrolling the garden and keeping the cottage safe all on my own before Joe arrived.

I remember the occasion well. He turned up one rainy night, small and skinny, with oil in his fur, a piteous wail and a bad cough. The woman made a big fuss trying to get the oil out while counting her pennies to pay the Vet and to this day I don't know why she bothered. After some weeks we finally woke up that no one was going to come and claim the creature and his temporary stay turned into 13 years.

And let me tell you it wasn't all wine and roses! Or cream and catnip for that matter. There were plenty of skirmishes over breakfast which erupted into full scale war by dinnertime. He was a big tabby, and boisterous, (the word "clumsy" springs to mind), while I am naturally quiet and elegant in my ways. Between us we had the woman running around in circles trying all sorts of weird and whacky tactics to help us get along together. But we became friends after he learned what rung he occupied on the ladder.

He's crossed the rainbow bridge now, and I've adjusted to not having the bumbling fool around although at first I was, perhaps, a little crazed and demanded a lot of affection. Yes, cats grieve too. Those were the days, my friend. Those were the days.

If you have more than one cat in your house, I recommend taking some advice from Pam Johnson-Bennett.

Cat Vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat

You need this book before you ever try to introduce cats to cats.

To start with, it explains how cat ranking hierarchy works in a multi-cat household. How many humans even begin to grasp the complexities of this? Johnson-Bennett makes it simple.

Plus lots of different suggestions to solve problems with unsociable behaviour and some excellent advice on playing with your cat!

When you start to share your life with a cat

Anyone who's been around a cat for any length of time well knows that we have enormous patience with the limitations of people. It constantly amazes me just how very tolerant we are of your foibles. But don't you want to raise the bar? Surely you would rather start off on the right foot, or paw, when you have a cat moving into your house.

We love security. We love a familiar setting. We love a routine. And we quickly become bored if you don't play with us regularly.

If you're about to share your house with a cat. I recommend another book by Pam Johnson-Bennett.

Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat

I recommend this for the newer cat owner. The information is helpful, easy to read, and intended for people who haven't lived with us before.

Take my word for it, if you read this book through you'll have a more enjoyable time and will truly be able to grasp the psychology of the Cat.

What Humans don't know about Cats

You don't know an awful lot at all do you? You could fill a book with what you don't know.

For instance, why don't you understand furballs? How do you measure my age next to yours? How do I tell the time? Bet you don't know why my whiskers twitch either.

And what is that white cat doing?

Fortunately, Why Do Cats Always Land on Their Feet? tells you lots of things that you don't know. Things you didn't know that you ever wanted to know.

Why Do Cats Always Land on Their Feet?

These two people have captured the essence of catdom and they make light work of explaining it to the rest of your species. In this little book they answer questions that I know (for sure) you have wondered about.

The Feline Mystique

Any human who lives with a cat will sense that in some indescribable way cats are special. Yes, we are special, once we were gods. Even in the 21st century we still have a strong connection with the goddess Bast and that's why we so frequently adopt women.

This book explores the mythical and historical connections between women and cats, the ways we show our significant humans what we feel about them, and how we choose to communicate with our owners.

The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection Between Women and Cats

Insightful, smart, funny, poignant - in short, the humourous and the tender side of life with our women.

Call me an old softie, but this book touches my heart

Thousands of years ago, cats were worshiped as gods. We have never forgotten this.

Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, Fully Revised and Updated

The Home Veterinary Handbook is an in-depth resource for ailments of all types as well as information on basic cat-care.

There's simply no better book on this subject. It gives the ordinary, everyday human, like yourself, the best in high-level, helpful information, while always noting when you have to seek advice from a veterinarian. (It's not meant to replace veterinary care).

I'm very impressed with the section on caring for an aged cat. You will be too.

Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, Fully Revised and Updated

Well organised and easy to read, not too technical, yet still very descriptive .I highly recommend this book for any human who lives with a cat - it's a must-have.

If you only get one book on cat health, get this one!

About Vladimir

My Bio

I am a philosopher. Intellectual pursuits and higher thought are not confined to humans. Of course, I am a cat with a higher IQ than most and, although fully conversant with quantum physics, alchemy and microbiology and very much in demand on the lecture circuit and Talk Shows, I remain humble. Fame has not turned my head.

Even in my youthful days I pondered the Mysteries of Life. What quirk of Fate caused me to adopt the woman in the cottage by the creek despite her eccentricities and the paucity of poached salmon?

Due to the lack of salmon I have taken up squid, and will reach my goal of becoming a Giant this very September. I've made some good friends in here who encourage me and the WiWon team has chosen me as Mascot!

My hobbies are bushwalking and bird watching.

The woman gives 10% of her income - and mine - to continue the work of Fred Hollows in treating avoidable blindness and improving indigenous health.

Blindness is a significant public health issue in Cambodia. Over 160,000 people are blind and an additional 20,000 become blind each year. The main cause of blindness is cataract, which can be treated by a simple 15 minute operation at an average cost of $25 (AUD$35). (That's the price of a crayfish tail).

The image of the cats reading a newspaper in the introduction is from an unknown source. The woman had it inside an old photo frame which has been on top of her wardrobe for more years than she cares to divulge. If you own this image please contact me (from my Full Profile page)
