Bill Gates' $600 Billion Challenge in Action

tweet

This lens brings more about Bill Gates the social activist, his $600 billion challenge and about changing the world. In Bill Gates' $600 Billion Challenge I highlighted Bill Gates' move to try to change the world through charity. In this lens I describe five charities that he supports.

Although Bill Gates donates almost exclusively through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is also a charitable foundation, I will treat the grants to the charities listed in this lens as grants made by Bill Gates. I will start by describing briefly the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Bill Gates supports charities through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation .

The foundation, founded by Bill Gates and his wife in 2004, has a two-entity structure. One entity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, distributes money to grantees. The other, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, manages the endowment assets. The foundation and the trust are separate legal entities with independently audited financial statements. However, according to the legal documents that govern the trust, it has the obligation to fund the foundation in the amount necessary to accomplish the charitable purposes.

Bill and Melinda Gates co-chair the foundation, while Jeff Raikes is its CEO.

In fact the original foundation was formed as the Willian H. Gates Foundation in 1994, when Bill Gates donated $94 million. It was renamed Bill and Melinda gates Foundation in 1999. In 2000 it merged with the Gates Learning Foundation and Bill Gates donated $126 million. In 2006 Warren Buffet decided to donate $29 billion over several years provided his donations are matched by those of Bill Gates.

The foundation is the biggest philanthropic organisation in the world. It had an endowment of US$33.5 billion as of December 31, 2009, and had donated more than $1.5 billion to charities around the world.

The foundation has been criticized because it invests the assets that it has not yet distributed with the exclusive goal of maximizing returns. It invests in companies that have been widely criticized for worsening poverty in the same developing countries where the foundation funds projects that aim to relieve poverty. These include companies that cause major pollution and pharmaceutical groups that sell only to developed countries

MASSIVEGOOD

A small charity but supported by Bill Gates

MASSIVEGOOD is a small charity which tries to tackle some major issues in the world. Its mission is to raise awareness and increase funding for global health issues such as HIV/AIDs, malaria, tuberculosis, as well as maternal and child health care.

Bill Gates supports this charity which uses the power of the internet to achieve its mission. It is present in social networks and is trying to build a community on its website.

MASSIVEGOOD encourages travelers to make a $2 micro-contribution towards major global health causes every time they purchase a plane ticket, reserve a hotel room or rent a car.

Since June 2010 travel companies have the possibility of integrating the MASSIVEGOOD donation platform in their internal travel management systems.">

Children with Aids Charity

Bill Gates also supports Children with AIDS Charity which was set up in the United Kingdom 1992. The aim of this national charity is to help young children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS maintain a good quality of life.

Child HIV infection is the newest chronic disease affecting the youngest. AIDS is unique in the sense that in most other chronic conditions people offer sympathy, whereas in the case of child AIDS this is most of the time absent. Apart from helping children with AIDS to lead a normal life, another vital role of CWAC is inform and educate the public.

According to CWAC there are at least HIV affected children living in the UK today - an increase of 550% since 1995.

CWAC is also present on the global scene through CWAC International. The main objective of CWAC International is to "boost assistance to small programmes and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) worldwide by promoting community capacity building in areas with high levels of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs)".

Its goal is to help achieve sustainable development mainly by helping the world understand our planet as one integrated system. It prioritizes the protection of Earth's ecosystems, oceans and atmosphere as well as the provision of social and economic opportunities for all of our planet's inhabitants. It works toward this goal through scientific research, education and the practical application of research for solving real-world problems.

850 scientists, postdoctoral fellows, staff and students work for the institute in its 30 centers on the following issues: climate and society, water, energy, poverty, ecosystems, public health, food and nutrition, hazards and urbanization.

It also advises various governments, the United Nations and other international agencies.

Food Bank For New York City

The fifth charity that Bill Gates supports is Food bank for New York City Food Bank For New York City is an organization which coordinates the distribution of food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to New York's hungry.

Approximately 3.3 million New Yorkers experience difficulty affording food for themselves and their families.

More than 3 million New Yorkers live in low-income neighborhoods that lack access to affordable, nutritious food.

Good lens and motivational for a great purpose.
Regarding Bill Gates... not sure if his money are for helping in real African poor communities or other purposes (like medical experiments or else).
No offense, but did anyone had access, for example, to one of those foundations in Africa?
Just from curiosity, does anyone knows what they are doing in Gaborone, Botswana, for example?

I guess when one has that much money and power -- one starts thinking about social issues. When one has so much money it is not really about charity but helping the system as a responsible citizen. Blessed this lens anyway -- it is nice to see that rich people are getting involved.

Squidoo Charity is a great charity too

When will Bill Gates build a lens?

The Squidoo Charity Fund has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity. Thanks to the Squidoo community, we've built schools in Cambodia, given underprivileged classrooms computers and software, funded important reseach against Juvenile Diabetes

Joel L. Fleishman ,author, The Foundation: A Great American Secret.

"In philanthropy, as in investing, you need a solid strategy to understand what works, what fails, and why. Money Well Spent provides the tools philanthropists need to create an effective strategy and achieve success." George Soros.
