Five Quick Fixes to Help Snuff Out Candle Fires
Ranked #30,955 in Home & Garden, #490,745 overall
Candles are a reasonable, traditional way to add a nice romantic atmosphere to your home...
However, experts warn that magic moments can quickly turn tragic if proper provisions and common sense aren't taken into account.
Home fires caused by candle usage cause an average of 166 civilian fire deaths, 1,289 civilian fire injuries, and $450 million in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In fact, every 34 minutes, a home candle fire is reported.
"Always keep in mind, a lit candle is an open flame, which is why candles have the potential for disaster, if left unattended," said Sol Ilowitz, at Prime Insurance Agency ". However, a bit of common sense can prevent fires from occurring."

Keeping your home safe should be your top priority. Here some helpful tips:
> Candles can easily be knocked over by children or pets. Have them lit, and store them up high. The same goes for lighters, and matches, store them up high, out of the reach of children. Never let teens or children have candles in their bedroom.
> Be careful in choosing where to place candles. Make sure the furniture is steady and won't tip over. Candles should fit into holders firmly - fastened holders should be made from material that won't burn.
> Highly flammable materials should be kept far away from candles. Candles can easily cause objects to catch fire, such as wood paneling and paperwork. A curtain by an open window is especially dangerous.
> Avoid plants, leaves, and flowers. Greenery can catch fire and spread very quickly. Avoid using candles in floral arrangements.
> When it comes to candles in bedrooms, you must be extremely careful. One third of candle fires start in the bedroom, when candles come into contact with mattresses, bedding, or curtains.

Candles can also be a problem when they put smoke into the air, which can stain walls and ceilings. "This can make a room look like it's been damaged by a fire," explains Sol Ilowitz. "However, a fire is sudden and unexpected, while this damage takes place over time, and may not be covered by your insurance policy. To prevent this, always use name brand, quality candles."
