Your Complete Guide to Residential Architecture

Ranked #5,547 in Home & Garden, #67,507 overall | Donates to Soldiers Angels

Forty Miles North of Manhattan

I am a residential architect practicing in Westchester County, New York, forty miles north of Manhattan. In 1999, my wife (also an architect) and I launched the residential architecture firm, Fivecat Studio.

Houses are our passion. Almost every weekend (when we're not working on our own cottage in the woods of Chappaqua), we load the kids and dogs into the car and take a ride through the back roads of Westchester County looking for great houses. When we go on vacation, we look for great houses. When we eat dinner, we discuss great houses. When we sleep, we dream of great houses. When we work, we strive to design great houses. It's what we do. It's what we are. We are residential architects... and we love great houses.

We also enjoy seeing what other residential architects are doing. It's interesting to us, to see how the same "problem" (to create a building, in which people live) is uniquely "solved" with each new project. A great house is a reflection of the owners' personalities and interests, a sensitive response to the environment in which it is located and a unique expression of the residential architect who designed it.

If you like houses and great house design, you'll love this lens.

...and if you love this lens, you may want to check out my blog (there's an RSS feed below) or subscribe to Fivecat Studio's free email newsletter all about residential architecture and design.

All proceeds from this lens go to Soldier's Angels. May God bless our US military.

FYI: The house at the top of this lens was designed by my partner (and wife) Annmarie McCarthy, AIA. It was designed for a family who lived in Mt. Kisco, New York. The house was to be built on the shore of Indian Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Unfortunately, it was never built. After 9-11, the client terminated the contract and moved to North Carolina. If you're interested, send us an email. We'd love to see it built!

House Museums

Historic Architecture Open to the Public

There are hundreds of historic homes open to the public. If you don't see your favorite, send a link to blog@fivecat.com and we'll add it to the list.
Fallingwater
The iconic house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy believes that Fallingwater is more than the sum of its parts: the architect, the client, the architecture, the art, the land and the period. It is the inspired coming together of these parts that makes Fallingwater a great work worthy of preservation.
The Philip Johnson Glass House
The mission of the Philip Johnson Glass House is for the 47-acre campus to become a center-point and catalyst for the preservation of modern architecture, landscape, and art, and a canvas for inspiration, experimentation and cultivation honoring the legacy of Philip Johnson (1906-2005) and David Whitney (1939-2005).
Biltmore
Building Biltmore was, at the time, one of the largest undertakings in the history of American residential architecture and the results were astounding. Over a six-year period, an entire community of craftsmen worked to build the country's premier home. The estate boasted its own brick factory, woodworking shop, and a three-mile railway spur for transporting materials to the site.
Historic Hudson Valley
Seven historic properties located in New York's Hudson Valley. The mission of Historic Hudson Valley is to celebrate the history, architecture, landscape, and material culture of the Hudson Valley, advancing its importance and thereby assuring its preservation.
Vanderbilt Mansion
Vanderbilt Mansion NHS, in terms of architecture, interiors, mechanical systems, road systems and landscape, is a remarkably complete example of a gilded-age country place, illustrating the political, economic, social, cultural, and demographic changes that occurred as America industrialized in the years after the Civil War.
Boldt Castle
Boldt Castle in the 1000 Islands Region of the St. Lawrence River stands as a remembrance of the magnificence of a bygone era . . . a monument of love on Heart Island of George C. Boldt for his wife Louise.
Colonial Williamsburg
Walk through time in this reconstructed colonial capitol. Follow in the footsteps of the founders as you walk the same streets they did.
Classic American Homes Preservation Trust
Six historic properties.
Mercer and Fonthill Museums
The Mercer Museum is a history museum of everyday life in America during the 18th and 19th centuries. Henry Mercer (1856-1930) gathered the collection and constructed the Museum. The collection of some 40,000 objects documents the lives and tasks of early Americans through the tools that met their needs and wants prior to the Industrial Revolution, or about 1850. Visitors can choose their own paths through the Museum. Most of the 55 exhibit rooms and alcoves display the tools or products of an early American craft, trade or occupation. Other rooms show categories of objects such as lighting devices or architectural hardware.
Taliesen
Put simply, Taliesin is the source. The ideas, concepts, theories and techniques applied to every structure that bears Frank Lloyd Wright's imprint had their genesis here. Wright used Taliesin as a kind of sketch pad ... a laboratory where ideas emerged, were given form, were tested and refined. The ideas that emerged here Wright applied to the buildings upon which his reputation rests. You can see the seeds from which Wright's work blossomed as you tour the Taliesin Estate.
Taliesen West
Frank Lloyd Wright began building this desert masterpiece in 1937 as his personal winter home, studio, and architectural campus. Located on the beautiful Sonoran desert in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in northeast Scottsdale, the site offers a broad range of guided public tours. Visitors experience firsthand Wright's brilliant ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Eames House
The Eames House, Case Study House #8, was one of 25 homes built as part of The Case Study House Program. The program came into being in the mid-1940s and continued through the early 1960s, largely through the efforts of John Entenza, publisher of Arts and Architecture magazine. The magazine announced that it would be the clients for a series of architect-design homes to be built and furnished using materials and techniques derived from the experiences of the second World War and best suited to express man's life in the modern world. Each home built would be for a real or hypothetical client taking into considerations their particular housing needs.
Alden B. Dow Home and Studio
Herbert H. Dow, Alden's father and founder of The Dow Chemical Company, began in 1909 to develop the 23 acres around his home in Midland, Michigan, into a vast landscaped garden. Alden grew up with an extensive knowledge of plants and an appreciation for the rich organic visual environment they can create. This is where he built his home and studio.
The White House
Public tours of the White House are available. Requests must be submitted through one's Member of Congress and are accepted up to six months in advance.
Farnsworth House
The Farnsworth House is one of the most significant of Mies van der Rohe's works, equal in importance to such canonical monuments as the Barcelona Pavilion, built for the 1929 International Exposition and the 1954-58 Seagram Building in New York.
Robie House
The Robie House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for his client Frederick C. Robie, is considered one of the most important buildings in the history of American architecture. Designed in Wright's Oak Park studio in 1908 and completed in 1910, the building is both a masterpiece of the Prairie style and renowned as a forerunner of modernism in architecture. Tours of the site offer both a first-hand experience of its amazingly contemporary spaces and the current restoration work that is returning the house to its original appearance.
Glessner House
Glessner House Museum engages diverse audiences in exploring urban life and design through the preservation and interpretation of the architecture of Henry Hobson Richardson and the historic home of John and Frances Glessner.
Olana
When Frederic Church purchased the property for Olana in 1860, he hired architect Richard Morris Hunt (who was later to build several of the "cottages" in Newport, R.I.) to design a small house in which he could raise a family. Called "Cosy Cottage", the house was occupied in the early summer of 1861.

The architect initially creates a line drawing upon the drawing paper. While designing the sketch the usage of pencil color in architectural drawing would be beneficial and it needs to be retained from beginning to end.
