I agree that "learning how to write a 5-paragraph essay is a key part of every student's education which makes these points important academic writing tips." However, here in Maryland they are teaching a system for writing BCRs (brief constructed response). The process that they use to teach "how to write a bcr" is maddening. Why don't they simply go with the tried-and-true 5 paragraph essay. It drives me crazy!

This is a very sound approach to the 5 paragraph essay. I am glad you mentioned to pay attention to detail. That is often lost on most students.
  • SereneSea Apr 7, 2011 @ 12:49 pm | delete
The step by step approach is very effective.
  • Kathryn002 Mar 22, 2011 @ 5:28 pm | delete
This is really interesting. We don't do these 5 paragraph essays here, for history exams anyway, we do 8 mark essays in which there are 5 main points as well as an introduction and conclusion. I actually quite enjoy essay writing as it brings different ideas to a logical conclusion in my head and is good to expand your knowledge of a subject.

Everything I know about writing has the 5 paragraph essay at its core. Even when I wrote my term papers as an English major in college, I used the 5 paragraph essay principals as a starting point and then built on them.

Grrr, I remember my primary school days, when my days were filled with pointless toppiced five para essays. I think they do come in handy, though!

Insightful lens, I will pass it onto students sometimes it's not nice to have a diverse explination of essay writing.
  • Irenemaria Dec 1, 2010 @ 3:12 pm | delete
Essay - to say it as short as possible. And still more
  • Jimmie Nov 2, 2010 @ 7:25 am | delete
I never heard it called hamburger or keyhole. But I get the analogy. :-)
I used to explain the essay as an expanded paragraph. Every sentence in a stand alone paragraph explodes into its own paragraph.

As a writer and a homeschooling mom, I found this lens quite beneficial. Sometimes I am guilty of giving writing assignments where I just say (or sometimes scream), "just write SOMETHING!!!" How much better if I can give my girlies some concrete expectations. Thank you!
