Five Simple Steps to a Better Running PC
Ranked #74,500 in Computers & Electronics, #1,142,919 overall
Easy Ways to Keep Your PC Running Fast
Here are five ways you can easily maintain and clean up your desktop or laptop PC. These are some of the tools many IT professionals use themselves, but are they are also simple enough for someone with little knowledge of computers to run.
Stay Updated
Windows Update provides you with the latest security updates and optional updates such as .Net frameworks and many device drivers. Run Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. This step is not necessary with Vista as it is built-in to the operating system. Simply click the start button, click All Programs, then click Windows Update. In the navigation window, click Check for updates.
Rid of Unwanted Software
Most new computers come with "bloatware" installed-software that does not provide you with any value but slows down boot times and consumes resources. Chances are even your older computer still has these installed, too. You can safely remove these programs using PC Decrapifier: http://pcdecrapifier.com/download. It will generate of list of "bad" software installed on your computer and give you the option to remove them all at once. This will result in faster start-up and shutdown times, less annoying popups and useless icons. Junk Files! Away!
Get rid of Internet browser cookies, temporary files, download history, and form history using a free program such as CCleaner. It can also scan your registry for problems. http://www.ccleaner.com/. Do Some Disk-Cleanup
Disk cleanup clears space on your hard drive. If you're running low on disk space, click on "Start", then "All Programs", then up to "Accessories", then "System Tools". Click on "Disk Cleanup" from the list. Click the "More Options" tab at the top of the page, and select all three of the following: "Windows Components," "Installed Programs," and "System Restore". Clean up all three by clicking on their respective tabs. We recommend deleting all but your most recent system restore point.
Do the Defragment
Defragmenting your computer safely moves your files to where they are most efficient. If you notice your hard drive is very slow to access files, this may help. We recommend running third-party defragmenter such as Defraggler (free): http://www.defraggler.com/.
