Online Reputation Management

Your Online Reputation
A reputation is a powerful thing, and our reputation is the most valuable thing that we own. An online reputation can help determine one's employment status (given that a potential employer is likely to "Google" a candidate, and may make a hiring decision based on this information) and can even have a direct impact on one's relationships (b/c a possible suitor is likely to "Google" you as well). More importantly, if you are in a profession that requires a direct relationship with clients (doctor, lawyer, teacher%u2026) it is vital that you maintain a good online reputation b/c in these cases you may loose patients, and clients based on unfounded rumors, or images taken out of context, and in the case of a teacher, parents may demand that their children be removed from your care, and this may have a detrimental impact on your career.
When we use the term "online reputation" we are referring to the reputation that an individual, or a company (website) has on the web (positive or negative) and this can be determined by doing a simple Google search for either your name, or a company's name. When you Google yourself what comes up? What about when you Google your business or a business that you are looking to frequent, what comes up?
Today many consumers use review websites such as "Yelp" to determine if they want to go to a certain restaurant or%u2026 and students may use a website such as "rate your professor" in order to see if they should take a course taught by this or that professor. These are both parts of your online reputation and a bad online reputation/ranking on sites such as those mentioned above can have a detrimental impact on your business/career.

How to Protect Your Online Reputation
Shield your online reputation
When it comes to protecting your online reputation there are a few things that you should do, the first and most important thing to do is to be aware that everything that you do or say online is public, any pic that you post on your social media account can potentially be seen by people who you did not intend.
It is important for you to be aware of your online reputation and of the online reputation of your business, the best way to do this is to go to Google and do a search for your name/the name of your company, what comes up, your Facebook or Linked In profile or is the first thing that comes up a bad review that one of your clients wrote about you? (Of course I must provide a warning here, the best defense against a bad online reputation is to provide good service to your clients%u2026 If your "bad reputation" is founded on merit, and there are many negative reviews about you/your business no one will be able to fix this); the most important lesson in protecting your reputation is therefore to not give anyone a reason to want to trash your reputation, in cases where your "bad reputation" is unfounded/undeserved it is wise to contact an online reputation management firm who can help to fix your reputation

Creating an Online Reputation
Build your online reputation
These days building an online reputation is an important skill for all of us to have. This is especially important for those who are self employed or who rely on a constant inflow of clients, but is also important for the rest of us (job seekers for example should build a reputation so that potential employers can find them)
When it comes to building an online reputation the most important thing is this, when you (or anyone else) Google your name, you should be on the first page of results. This is of course much easier to do if your name is Ty Hyderally, Moshe Zchut, or Eugene Aronsky (not very common names) rather than if your name is John Smith, or any other common name, but even if you have a common name or if you share your name with a celebrity%u2026 it is still possible for you to appear on the first page of results when a search for your name is done.
As far as techniques for building your reputation there are a few things that you should be doing, you active on popular social networking sites (Twitter, Gather, Facebook%u2026) participating in discussions and creating groups of friends on each. In addition, it is important for you to have a blog, this blog can be on any subject, but it is important that you appear as the author of each post (In most blog platforms you are required to go into settings and change the setting b/c the default setting has your username as the author). It is also crucial that the blog be active and you must post material to the blog at least a few times per week. An active blog will allow you to increase the brand equity of your name, and it will get readers to link to individual blog posts, which will increase the rankings of those posts in search engines and will boost your online reputation.

How to Fix a Bad Reputation
Fixing a reputation
Fixing a bad reputation can be a tedious and difficult task, and if your bad reputation is well deserved, b/c you committed a crime, did something unethical%u2026 it may not be possible to entirely scrub your reputation.
Generally speaking, fixing a bad online reputation means making it more difficult for people to find the article, the review%u2026 that mentions something that you do not want people to know about you or your business. The way that this is done is by creating pages of positive material about you/your business and promoting these pages (with SEO techniques) to ensure that these pages will appear on page 1 of Google results. Since most people do not often go past the first page of results (assuming that they are able to find what they are looking for on the first page) few will scroll to the 2nd, 3rd%u2026 page and find the material that you do not want them to read.
*Fixing a bad reputation is not intended to be used to deceive people or to be used in a negative way. If you did something deserving of a bad reputation and if you were mentioned negatively in court documents, or on a website such as CNN, it is unlikely that you would be able to get the page with the negative info dropped from page 1 of results.

Marketing for Contractors
SEO for contractors, web design for contractors, online optimizatuion for contractors
Website optimization is the key to online marketing for home remodeling contractors. A good website must utilize effective industry specific SEO that will help move the website up on the rankings on search engines. For a site to be profitable it must attract customers, and they will need to find what they are looking for in just a few seconds or they will move on to another site. Marketing for contractors will lead customers to the site, but then the site must be well built to keep the customer interested.
Another important aspect is using geo specific tags to help customers find contractors in their immediate area. Search engines have web crawlers that are looking for the most pertinent information when compared to the search entry. Customers in the New Jersey area will want to connect with contractors who are available to provide the home remodeling services in New Jersey that they are looking for.
Industry specific SEO will help businesses create a solid online presence and attract more clients. An experienced home remodeling website marketing service will be sure to use tailor made SEO services that will fit with the specifics of each business. This will help move the business up in the rankings on search engine results pages. This will increase customers as well as revenue.

Using LinkedIn for Your Online Reputation
Social networking and your reputation
One of the better social media tools for building and maintaining a positive reputation is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a professional social network that is designed to help employers connect with possible employees as well as to help professionals connect with each other. If you have a LinkedIn profile, it is likely that this will be the first page that comes up in Google whenever a search for your name is done. There are a few important things to know when it comes to using LinkedIn to improve your online reputation, the first of these is that you must make sure that your profile is completed and you should make sure that you have at least a few dozen friends in your network (you should invite everyone in your email contact list). If your LinkedIn profile is new, or if you wish to have greater visibility you should join groups in LinkedIn and participate in discussions, each discussion will link back to your profile and this will increase the rank of your profile as well as grow your network, b/c if the people in your groups like what you have to say they are likely to join your network.
Using Facebook for Your Online Reputation
Facebook and your reputation
Another great tool to build your online reputation is Facebook. Facebook is currently the most popular social network in the world and has around half a billion members. Facebook allows users to create/personalize a profile, add friends, share pictures, play games with friends%u2026 and is an all around great tool when it comes to staying in touch with friends...As far as using Facebook for your online reputation, the most important advice that I can offer is to be careful! Set the highest privacy settings, but still be careful about what you share and what you say! People tend to share way too much information and pictures (that may end up being embarrassing years later) and this information/pictures has a way of leaking out. Even if you set the highest privacy settings, your information can still be visible to all of your friends, and they may repost something. Also, remember that your boss, your parents, teachers%u2026 may be in your friends network, and they are likely to see things that may get you in trouble if you are not careful.
As far as using Facebook to boost or improve your online reputation, you should set up a "fan page". Fan pages on Facebook are indexed by Google, and are likely to rank in search engine results.
