Instructions to Reset Mercedes Benz Radio Code

As I was trying to resolve my problem with my radio in my Mercedes, I ran across a lot of different advice on how to resolve my issue. Unfortunately since my car is an older car the display on the radio was very difficult to see the messages that were appearing. Sometimes the advice was redundant or occasionally conflicting. This is my experience and how I was able to reset the Mercedes radio code. Hopefully it will help those of you with similar challenges to fix this issue quickly.

Instructions to Fix the Radio Code Issue in a 1997 Mercedes Benz C280

So, you've changed the battery in your Mercedes, or your battery ran down, or for some other reason disconnected the battery cable from the battery and now the radio won't work.

In my case my mechanic disconnected the battery to work on my fuel line. After reconnecting the battery the radio stopped working. I learned later it was for anti-theft protection.

I eventually located the radio code but the incorrect code had been entered several times already and it seemed to be locked out. In addition, the display was mostly blacked out due to age and it was very difficult to see any messages on the screen.

If you've encountered this, these are the steps you need to take to get your radio running again. This is for a 1997 Mercedes Benz C280, although my guess is that it will work for a lot of different Mercedes Benz models.

First, get the radio code. It is a five digit code located on a business size card in the original owners manual. If you don't have it you will have to make a trip to the Mercedes Benz dealership to get the radio code. It is based on the VIN and they can run it for you. They ran mine for free.

Once you have that code, turn the car and the radio on. There will be a WAIT message that will appear. Leave the car and the radio running for about 20 minutes or so. Some others have experienced longer wait times but this is based on what worked for me. The basic thing is that the radio has to be powered up and running. After 20 minutes (give or take some time) the WAIT message will change to a flashing CODE message. At that point, input the five digit radio code on the radio panel (using the preset keys 1-6) then press the SC button on the radio. You may or may not have to turn the radio off and then back on. I did, and the radio worked after that.

I spent several months off and on trying to figure this out since my display was nearly non-existent. If you can see your display it will be much easier to reset the radio code.

I hope this saves you a lot of time to figure this out. Good luck!!
