The PS2 can be easily fixed and still enjoyed for hours more, but if you must get rid of your ps2 let us help you out.

I would recommend the PS2, with the slim or Fat version.  Its very easy to take with you to a friends house.  Easy to hook up and play, with the slim design it hides easily.  They still make new games for the PS2, and not as pricey as many of the newer systems on the market.

Tools Needed

1 Philips Screw Driver
1 1.4mm Philips Screw Drive
1 1.0 mm Flat Head Screw Drive
1 Black Permanent Marker
1 Pressurized Can of Air

1. Start By Removing the 8 Screws from the Bottom of the PS2. Notice you'll have 4 long screws and 4 short screws. Keep a mental not where they go
2. Remove the Warranty Seal
3. Now its time to open the unit. Open carefully trying not to break the metal tape on the inside that connects the power and eject buttons.
4. Once the unit is opened, now would be a good time to clean the unit with a can of air, or using a vacuum.
5. Now remove the 4 screws above where the disc tray is. This is were you'll use the 1.4mm Screw Driver.
6. Then you want to plug the PS2 in and turn on, and press the eject button.
7. Now the tray is removed you are left looking at the lens and the guts of the PS2.
8. Locate the White Gear, back behind the laser lens. The gear looks like a small white wheel with a bunch of notches in it.
9. Now mark with a marker the point where the white gear and silver metal clasp touch.
10. This is your reference point to wear you start from.
11. Turn the gear one notch counter clock ways. Then place the cover above the disc tray cover back on top. You don't need to screw this back down.
12. Insert a PS2 Game, and see if your unit reads the disc. If it reads the disc, insert a DVD, if that works great you've fixed it.
13. If you still have a DRE, then continue to repeat steps 9 -12. If you continue to have Disc read errors, after turning the gear counter clock ways. Then reset the dial to the mark you made with the permanent markers. Now its time to repeat steps 9-12, but turning the gears clock ways.
