June 14 is designated as Flag Day
Our American Flag, the Stars and Stripes, was first designed and made by Betsy Ross. According to legend, she was asked to do this by George Washington. Our flag was officially adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777 and the flag resolution was passed.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America adopted June 14 as Flag Day in 1907 and it is still a mandatory observance by all Elks Lodges across the United States. It was not until 1949 that Elk Harry S. Truman made the proclamation for June 14 to be a national observance for our nation's flag.

What is Flag Day?
Flag Day on Wikipedia
In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14 1937, Rennerdale, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday.
Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110 is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President's discretion to proclaim officially the observance.
The longest-running Flag Day parade is held annually in Quincy, Massachusetts, which began 1952 and celebrated its 57th year in 2009.http://www.patriotledger.com/archive/x2036715518/Flag-Day-is-a-banner-day-in-Quincy

Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag on Wikipedia
The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States is an oath of loyalty to the republic of the United States of America, originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892. The Pledge has been modified four times since then, with the most recent change adding the words "under God" in 1954. The Pledge is predominantly sworn by children in public schools in response to state laws requiring the Pledge to be offered. Congressional sessions open with the swearing of the Pledge, as do government meetings at local levels, meetings held by the Boy Scouts of America, the Freemasons and their concordant bodies, other organizations, and some sporting events.
The current version of the Pledge of Allegiance reads:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands: one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
According to the United States Flag Code, the Pledge "should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 4, US Code, http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/04C1.txt [http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/04C1.txt]
You're A Grand Old Flag
You're A Grand Old Flag - Patriotic Song
You're A Grand Old Flag written by George M. Cohan. Remember this one from Grade School ? We used to sing this almost every day, I wonder if they still do ? The Words are: You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. Should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag. You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. Should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag. Pledge of Allegiance: I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under GOD, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all. I hope you Love your Country and your Flag as much as I do. GOD BLESS AMERICA Lance † .

IN 1991, WHILE SERVING IN DESERT STORM, THE 1ST GULF WAR, I WROTE STROM THURMOND IN WASHINGTON,D.C. AND ASKED HIM TO SEND ME A FLAG TO FLY OVER OUR CAMP WHICH WAS LOCATED
NEAR THE KUWAIT BORDER. HE SENT THE FLAG. I STILL HAVE IT AND ON FLAG DAY I FLY THAT SAME FLAG IN STROM THURMOND'S HONOR. I PLAN TO DO THIS AS LONG AS I'AM ABLE.

I love the American Flag and all that it symbolizes, and have a flag somewhere on the property always...but must give my husband credit for making sure that we always have a large flag hanging in view of the street. I loved reading what Jimmy Manley shared, thank you for your service for our Nation to you, and any other men and women who have served in the military that are reading this.
God bless America.

Cohan's "Grand Old Flag" is one of my favorite songs. One of the things I love when I am on base at Patrick at noon is standing at attention wherever I am, on the corner of a street or in the middle of a parking lot, as the loud speaker plays Our National Anthem. It concerns me when I attend a high school football game and see the teenagers laughing and playing around on the stands during its music. Our children are not being taught as we were...to really appreciate all that we have under this wonderful flag. This is a wonderful lens, Nancy. Thank you so much! My husband would truly appreciate it.

- We had a John Phillip Sousa LP that we played many times growing up, so listening to Stars and Stripes Forever brought back some memories of days gone by. One thing I particularly enjoyed working in the school system the last couple years was doing the Pledge with students every morning. Nice work here and a delight to visit!

I'm not American, but have always loved that magnificent country and loved my visit there and have a great friend there who has out of his own pocket paid for my eldest daughter and my son to stay with him in Delaware.
