Best Flash Fiction
Ranked #104 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #4,218 overall
Fiction in a flash! The best flash fiction stories start with a good idea.
Flash fiction is very short... less than 1000 words. Actually, most people consider flash fiction to be less than 500 words, and many people try for less.
It can be fun to write, and challenging. Try to pack an entire story into a few words! This is a talent to be developed.
Other names for flash fiction
...short fiction has been called other things.
Some call it...
sudden fiction
microfiction
micro-story
postcard fiction
prosetry
or
a short-short story...
Where the term "flash fiction" came from
...seriously, nobody is certain about the origin of the term.
Some believe the term 'flash fiction' came from an anthology of stories 750 words or less published in 1992. The literary magazine publishers wanted stories short enough to fit on two magazine pages.
Length of flash fiction
...that's the real issue, isn't it?
Flash fiction could be as short as two or three words... though most of it is much longer, up to 1000 words. The bottom line is, the publisher is the one that decides how long the stories should be. Study your market, know what's expected and desired, and write to specifications.
My favorite flash fiction length is right around 500 words.
How to write flash fiction
...in a flash?
I write to the prompt. Each day I find a writing prompt, then spend a moment thinking about the story I'd like to write, then simply write it out. That usually takes about ten minutes.
The story should have a beginning, an end, and a middle. If it doesn't it could be just a scene rather than an actual flash fiction story.
Remember to give your characters character. They must express themselves through their personalities and desires.
"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
...flash fiction of six words attributed to Ernest Hemingway.

When to write flash fiction
...this is just a suggestion, so take it or leave it...
I believe in practice writing - a daily habit of putting something down on PAPER (not computage this time!) ... yes, PRACTICE writing, just for fun and for stretching the imagination.
My suggestion is to use practice writing time to quickly write a little story of about 300 to 500 words. I do this quite often, and have come up with some stories I think are terrific! Of course, I've also written some stories that fell flat when I re-read them six months later. It is the luck of the draw and you can't write good stories unless you risk writing bad ones!
My practice writing sessions are my best source of flash fiction.

- I enjoy reading flash fiction. I wonder sometimes if this is because of my shorter attention span that seems to come along with the aging process. I think short fiction is also a good example of great writing talent in its use of few well-chosen words to tell a well-written tale.

- Interesting. Is there any sort of real money to be made with this or is it more of just a hobby?

- For me, it is writing practice. Sometimes I post my stories to my blog. Eventually I'll make a book of them and put them on Amazon in Kindle and paperback. So I'll probably make money, though I don't expect it to be a lot.

- Vestal Review pays its writers. I had a whole novel in flash fiction, My Life at First Try, and was paid quite nicely for it.

- I have also written flash fictions and I enjoy very much when I try to maintain the word count. Some of my flash fictions are less than 400 words, but I have never tried to write under 200 words. The links you have provided here seems to be very useful. I will sure check them.

- love it! And I love microfiction (that is what i call it). I would love to someday have a "book club" where people wrote microfiction and got together to discuss it. There is so much room for interpretation - it can deep really quick!
