Equipment for better flash photograpy
Here you'll find links to flash kit, whether studio or portable/hotshoe. Have a look around and let me know if I've missed any.
The lists at Better Flash Photography were getting in the way of the articles and links to great sites, so I've separated them out. Fed up of looking at stuff to buy, then head on over to Better Flash Photography for a digest of some of the best flash and strobe-based photographers.
Right now, this lens is mainly a list of links broken down by the type of equipment. As I develop this lens further, I'll write more about each piece of equipment and what we can do with them.

Light Stands
Essential for putting your light sources in the right place
Light stands are great for getting your lights in the right place. Without them, you're left with the flash on your camera's hotshoe or on whatever piece of furniture you can use as a stand.
Before you buy, have a think about what you need from a light stand. You can have light and portable or heavy and sturdy. There are short, medium and tall, so have a think about how high you need to place it. In many cases, you could use a clamp rather than a light stand. Also think about what light-source you're using and what modifiers you'll want to use. For instance a studio-strobe with octabox will be a lot heavier than a portable strobe with an umbrella. However even the portable strobe and umbrella at an angle will put a lot of force on a boom stand. And that introduces us to another concept; the boom. Many stands only extend vertically. If you need more flexibility, then a separate arm that can be moved horizontal as well will make life easier.

Backgrounds
Turning your rooms into a studio
No matter how attractive the subject (or model), no-one wants to see your room behind the subject especially if you live in a cluttered house. An easy change is to put a background up. You can buy single, solid colour backgrounds or mottled fabrics for portraits. Depending on the room, you may be able to clamp the background, however most of us will have to resort to background stands and supports.
Decide what you want to photograph, then you can figure out what type of background to use. Portraits do not usually require full length backgrounds, so you could use a background of 1x1m (better 1.2m x 1m) for some shots, but may need 1.5m x 1.5m for more variety in focal length and composition. Full-length shots will require a background supported from 2m and rolling out to spread onto the floor. Smooth backgrounds can be obtained with using a paper (rather than fabric) roll, disposing of the paper as it becomes soiled with footwear.
