Flat Coat Retriever: A Unique Breed of Retriever

The Flat coat Retrievers were originally a breed of retriever that were a hunter's best friend. Established in the 19th century, their job was retrieving the game that fell as the guns took aim.  They get their name due to the way their coats lay smooth and flat against their bodies.

The flat coat retriever is a versitile breed which serves as both family pet and hunting companion, and have even been used as a show dog due to their rare and beautiful appearance.  Their distinguishing characterisitics include the silhouette of the dog, the shape of it's head, the type of coat, in addition to the way it moves smoothly and effortlessly.  The head of the flat coated retriever appears to be in one seamless piece, which occurs only in this breed of dog.  Their legs are strong and covered with feathery fur.

Flat coat retrievers carry themselves with confidence and have a demeanor of strength and class, with an attitude of acute alertness.  They tend to measure between 22 and 24 inches in height, with a lean body fit for hunting.  Their ears are slightly small and thick with fur.  They usually have straight hair, with an extremely shiny coat.

Breeding and Training a Flatcoat Retriever

A flatcoat retriever can be expected to survive between 9 and 15 years. Due to the limited availability of this breed, it is recommended that you breed your flat coat retriever if possible, so that you can continue to own one for years to come.

Most Flatcoat retrievers owners will want to train their dogs to hunt and retrieve game.Training should begin between 7 and 9 weeks of age if you get your dog as a puppy, but this breed is very intelligent, and therefore can be trained at any age.

Training should be regular and consistent until your dog is able to complete all of the tasks that you have taught.
