Time for anatomy class...Well, the abdomen area is made up of 3 major types of abs muscles. These are the following :
1. Rectus abdominis
This is the most common part and what most people refer to when they talk about abs. This is a large flat muscle wall that runs from the lower chest to the pubic bone.
2. Obliquus abdominis
These are what we called the obliques. This muscle runs diagonally along the side of the mid-section from the lower ribcage to the pubic area. There is the internal obliques which lie beneath the external obliques.
3. Transversus abdominis
Then there is this thin strip of muscle that runs horizontally across the abdomen.
Now all of these abs muscles take a long time to develop and hence most people have struggled to trained them. Plus, you need a pretty low level of body fat in order for these abs muscles to be shown.

Here are some of the common ab exercises that can help target these ab muscles effectively :1. Crunches
Do 3 sets of 15-20 reps. Works on the upper abs.
2. Pelvic tilts
Do 3 sets of 15-20 reps.Works on the lower ab muscles of the abdomen below the navel.
3. Side bends
Do 3 sets of 15-20 reps. Works on strenthening the obliques.
I will recommend also scheduling exercises for other body parts as well to help in the reducing of overall body fats. Use a program similar to the example below :
Day 1:
Work on your biceps, back, abs
Day 2:
Work on your hamstrings, shoulders, abs
Day 3:
Work on your quads, forearms, calves
Day 4:
Finally work on your triceps, chest, abs
For a start, do a complete one set for a couple of weeks before adding one more set thereafter. This is a structure of a basic workout program.
