The Flea goes through four stages in it's life: egg, larvae, pupa, imago (adult). The adult female flea can lay approximately 20 eggs a day, which enables a house to become infested rapidly.
Depending upon conditions, fleas can live from several weeks to several months and can go into a hibernation period until more favorable conditions exist (can survive through winter, can wait for a host to appear).
Fleas do not fly but can jump up to six feet, making a whole home cleaning/extermination necessary.
Dogs and Cats are not the only hosts for fleas; people and other animals like rabbits can host fleas too.
Fleas can get into human hair and can bite people leaving bite marks and rashes.
Fleas are known to carry certain diseases that can not only effect pets but people too.
Fleas feed on blood from it carriers and in a pet that is young or senior in severe infestation can cause anemia.
Identifying Fleas on your Dog or Cat
Identifying fleas on your pet will take separating the fur and looking close to the skin. Use a metal flea comb that has close teeth, comb pet thoroughly and dunk flea comb in alcohol or bowl with hot sudsy water between strokes.
Fleas leave behind "flea dirt" (flea poo from digesting the blood from your cat or dog). If you put this flea dirt in water it will turn red as it contains blood.
Flea eggs are microscopic, which means they are hard to see. - Being a pet owner and a vacuum shop proprietor I have come across a few natural flea remedies that you might want to include. If you put moth balls in your vacuum bag it will kill any flea or flea eggs you might vacuum up. To check and see if your fleas are gone but a bowl of water on the floor with a lamp over it. Any live fleas will jump in for a midnight swim.
