Fleer 1986-87 Basketball Cards set has 132 commonn cards and 11 stickers
I'm almost fifty now and haven't played the sport of my youth for years so to compensate my thrist for this fabulous game I've developed a hobby of collecting basketball cards of my favorite NBA stars.Fleer 1986-87 basketball cards to be exact.Basketball cards where no big item until Michael Jordan arrived on the scene and coincidently fleer decided to return to creating NBA cards fleer had good intuition because some of these cards are worth thousands now and many a basketball collector now try to assemble complete sets of common cards and the stickers.
Fleer's return to the basketball card industry after a 25-year hiatus. This 132-card standard-size marks what is considered to be the beginning of the modern era of basketball cards. The cards were issued in 12-card wax packs (11 cards plus a sticker) that retailed for 50 cents. Wax boxes consisted of 36 packs. A stick of gum was also included in each pack. The set is checklisted alphabetically by the player's last name. Since only the Star Company had been issuing basketball cards nationally since 1983, most of the players in this Fleer set already had cards which are considered Extended Rookie Cards. However, since this Fleer set was the first nationally distributed through wax packs since the 1981-82 Topps issue, most of the players in the set are considered Rookie Cards including Michael Jordan. Other Rookie Cards, of those that had Star Company cards include Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas and Dominique Wilkins. Rookie Cards of those that did not previously appear in a set include Joe Dumars, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin and Charles Oakley. Red, white and blue borders surround a color photo that contains a Fleer "Premier" logo in an upper corner. The card backs are printed in red and blue on white card stock. Several cards have "Traded" notations on them if the player was traded subsequent to the photo selection process. It's important to note that some of the more expensive cards in this set (especially Michael Jordan) have been counterfeited in the past few years. Checking key detailed printing areas such as the "Fleer Premier" logo on the front and the players' association logo on the back under eight or ten power magnification usually detects the legitimate from the counterfeits. The cards are condition sensitive due to dark borders and centering problems.

Tribute to two of basketballs great players good friends and great on court rivals
Bird and Johnson first dueled in the 1979 NCAA title game; as professional basketball players, they would face off numerous times during the 1980s, including the NBA Finals of 1984, 1985 and 1987. Lakers vs. Celtics, and specifically Bird vs. Magic, quickly became one of the greatest rivalries in the history of professional sports.
Spud Webb 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Card
Spud Webb this little man won the 1986 basketball dunk contest
One of the most assume fleer 1986-87 basketball cards is the Spud Webb common card his freakish jumping ability is higlighted with a shot of him dunking in a game. Spud's height above the rim is almost unbelievable it looks as if he is a foot above the rim! There are some events in a lifetime that you can remember vividly as if they happened just yesterday the 1986 slam dunk contest is one of these vivid memories that I have.I was visiting my friend Garner Ford this saturday afternoon
and we had the Nba all star weekend on the TV set as it came time for the slam-dunk contest we started perdicting the champ before hand we both concluded it would be Dominique Wilkins again. We both knew of this little guy Spud Webb Dominique's teammate on the Allanta Hawks as we are both NBA fans and watch games whenever they came on after Spud's first round of amazing dunks we where covinced and realized we were seeing a version of david defeating goliath .As the final round of dunks between finalist Webb and Wilkins roled around we both where out of our seats chanting Spud-Spud --Spud what a great performance it was and brings chills to me whenever I think about this great dunk-off!

Daryl Dawkins aka "Chocolate Thunder"
Darryl Dawkins the most charismatic and vocally creative basketball player during the 1986-87 fleer era was fun to watch play as well as being interviewed he would always have a creative rhyme for fans.Darryl's claim to fame was his dunking and then creatively name his dunks "Chocolate Thunder" as he would name himself will always be remembered by fans who saw his amazing dunks and backboard shattering skills.Without Darryl Dawkins, the NBA would have been a whole lot less fun. Dawkins was an enormous man who skipped college for the NBA, broke backboards, named his dunks, dreamed up imaginary planets, played some darn good basketball, and generally spent a career as one of the most enigmatic and entertaining players in the game.
The 6-foot-11, 252-pound Dawkins was terrifically strong, could run the floor, had a nice jumper, and could rebound and block shots. He averaged double figures in scoring nine times in his 14 years in the NBA, often ranking among the league leaders in field-goal percentage. He also played in the NBA Finals three times as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the flip side, Dawkins set an NBA record for fouls in a season (386 in 1983--84), and he never quite lived up to the expectations that had been heaped upon him when he was drafted out of high school.
Hoping to follow in Malone's footsteps, the 18-year-old Dawkins renounced his college eligibility and applied for the 1975 NBA Draft as a hardship candidate. The Philadelphia 76ers made him the fifth overall pick, behind David Thompson, Dave Meyers, Marvin Webster, and Alvan Adams.
With his size, speed, and touch, Dawkins was expected to take over the league. But he handled the expectations in typical fashion.
In 1977--78 Dawkins finally found a regular role, coming off the bench for nearly 25 minutes per game. Now a robust 20 years old, he averaged 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds and ranked second in the league in field-goal percentage at .575. With a club that included Julius Erving, George McGinnis, Lloyd Free, and Doug Collins, the Sixers made another solid postseason run, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the Washington Bullets in six games.
Prior to the 1978--79 season Philadelphia traded McGinnis to the Denver Nuggets for Bobby Jones and Ralph Simpson. The move was made in part to clear space for Dawkins on the Sixers' front line, which also included 6-foot-11 Caldwell Jones. Over the next three seasons Dawkins and Caldwell Jones split time at the center and power forward positions, and Dawkins had the most productive stretch of his career. In 1979--80 he averaged 14.7 points and a career-high 8.7 rebounds, helping the Sixers back to the NBA Finals, which they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

Dawkins named the backboard-breaking dunk "Chocolate Thunder Flying, Robinzine Crying, Teeth Shaking, Glass Breaking, Rump Roasting, Bun Toasting, Wham, Bam, Glass Breaker I Am Jam." He named other dunks as well: the Rim Wrecker, the Go-Rilla, the Look Out Below, the In-Your-Face Disgrace, the Cover Your Head, the Yo-Mama, and the Spine-Chiller Supreme. The 76ers also kept a separate column on the stat sheet for Dawkins's self-created nicknames: "Sir Slam," "Double D," and "Chocolate Thunder."
Also, he claimed to be an alien from planet Lovetron where he spent off-season practicing "interplanetary funkmanship" and where his girlfriend Juicy Lucy still lived.
Darryl Dawkins - Mr. Chocolate Thunder
Darryl Dawkins (born January 11, 1957 in Orlando, Florida) is a former professional basketball player, most noted for his days with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, although he also played briefly for the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz late in his career. Dawkins averaged double figures in scoring nine times in his 14 years in the NBA, often ranking among the league leaders in field-goal percentage. He also played in the NBA Finals three times as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. On the flip side, Dawkins set an NBA record for fouls in a season (386 in 1983-84), and he never quite lived up to the expectations that had been heaped upon him when he was drafted out of high school. A raw talent who needed time to develop, Dawkins languished on the Sixers' bench for his first two seasons. As a rookie in 1975-76 he played in only 37 games, averaging 2.4 points in 4.5 minutes per game. The next year he played a limited role during the regular season but began to emerge during the playoffs. The Sixers advanced all the way to the NBA Finals that year, and Dawkins was called upon to help battle Portland's Bill Walton. The Trail Blazers won the series in six games, but Dawkins earned respect among the Philadelphia coaching staff with 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest in the postseason. In the 1977-78 season Dawkins finally found a regular role, coming off the bench for nearly 25 minutes per game. My Favorite Sticker from the Fleer 1986 set KAREEM ABDUL JABAAR
shown shooting his unstoppable sky- hook!!
My favorite sticker from this set is sticker number 1 Kareem Jabbar shooting his sky hook.Kareem's sky hook was an unstoppable shot if opponents let him elevate and get his rhythm it was money in the bank. I can't remember ever seeing it get blocked. I'm sure it was block a few times I just never saw it. Poetry in motion yep that describes Jabbar and this shot. I sometimes wonder why modern day basketball centers don't use it more? Mastering The hook shot just takes a little practice .Magic had Kareem teach him the sky hook and he used it to beat the Celtics once in a finals game in the Garden. Yes the 1986 sticker of Kareem and his hook shot is as stated poetry in motion. How appropriate that he became the all time leader in scoring with ....that's right you guessed it the ...SKY HOOK!! Tribute to Kareem

- If the Lakers had a center half as good as Jabbar the championship would be a given.
