They're oh-so-Fleet

The Fleet Foxes are a beard-having band from Seattle. Their sound is special, and savory, and their music longs to be sung and remembered and shared. Before you read on, please open a tab and visit their MySpace page, and listen to the song "White Winter Hymnal," which has seized me by the ears. It is the world's most pleasant song to have stuck in your head. It's also full of longing, and hearing it makes me want to hear it again-- makes me wish I'd written it myself.

I hope you haven't heard of them, that this lens will have the opportunity to change your life a little bit. When you come back from your beauty-induced stupor, check out the Wikipedia article (up ahead) for some more info about the band.

Wikifoxes

Fleet Foxes are a five-piece Seattle-based band signed to Sub Pop and Bella Union. The band came to prominence in 2008 with the release of their second EP, Sun Giant, and their debut full length album Fleet Foxes. Both Sun Giant and their eponymous debut album received much critical praise and reviewers often noted their use of refined lyrics and vocal harmonies. The quintet describes its music as "baroque harmonic pop jams".

The First Listen

Careful, you'll be singing the rest of the day.

The first listen is quite an introduction. That gentle echo and the full, natural harmonies give you the feeling that you're listening from the back of an empty church.

The lyrics are poetic, but not in that mushy, heavy-handed way that doesn't sound like music. Instead, there's a linguistic flow that resembles intimate conversation. It not only adds meaning of its own, but matches the melodic register with its tone and imagery.

The melodies are adventurous-- they make musical sense, with just a hint of the over-familiar. But just when you think you can predict the next note, the song does something unexpected and beautiful to renew your interest.

You'll surely be hungry for more of the Foxes' sound, so give their MySpace player another chance to blow your hat off.

I was introduced to this band by a very good friend of mine. The reason that I do react to your posts, is that I reacted the very same way to their music as you told people they would. Luckily for me, I've seen them live 3 days ago. They blew my mind. The longing for singing along was so big, but I simply did not dare because of Robin's angel-like voice. I happened to stand in front of him. I did not ever expect them to be this good live.

I listened to the recommended track. Utterly beautiful. I will be purchasing this album later today.

Meet the Band

Well, not in person, but you get my meaning.

This is Robin Pecknold, the band's lead singer and songwriter. He also plays guitar. He'd be pleased to meet you, if he met you.

This is Skye Skjelset, guitarist. Good luck pronouncing his name.

Meet Josh Tillman, drummer. Here he's performing a solo gig, which he does sometimes.

Christian Wargo is also in a band called the Crystal Skulls. He sings, he plays, he dances, he even makes julienne fries.

The great mystery here is Casey Wescott, of whom I can find no pictures. I'll bet the band made him up. Maybe he's just shy, or plays a tuba, or is actually a vampire and can't be photographed. Can vampires be photographed?

Work with me here, this is one unpunny band name.

People are speaking highly of the Fleet Foxes. Some of them post videos; others just listen to the Sun Giant EP and weep that they'll never have beards as lush (or, as the Stranger calls them, "Jesusy").

Watch out for the Foxes

They want your money so they can make music.

Well, I guess that's not so wrong. Below are some purchasables from the Fleet Foxes on Amazon. Even if you decide not to buy a FF album, please don't steal it from them-- they're a bouncing baby band that needs nourishment to grow.

Sun Giant EP

Pitchfork reviewed it, and gave it one of the most glowing reviews I've ever seen on that site. And Pitchfork is picky. One of the highlights of the review:

"Sun Giant is more than a tour souvenir or a promotional teaser for a proper release. It's a sovereign work: a statement EP, supremely crafted and confident."
