Travel with Children : Travel with Animals : Pre-Plan to avoid but survive layovers and delays
There are some myths and some out-dated rules about travel with children and pets, also about what the airlines must do for passengers in the event of a delay that linger in people's minds. Knowing the facts before you take off or even choose which airline to book is crucial. Included is the new Tarmac Delay Rule, ideas for activities to keep kids entertained on the plane, lists of Airport Pet Relief Areas and much more.
This lens will be updated as information is gathered and as people send in ideas. How do you travel with your kids or pets? How do you handle layovers without simply sitting and staring out the window for hours? Which airlines and airports are your favorites -- or not?
When planning a trip, you might remember the old adage, Hope for the best but plan for and expect the worst.

Grandparents are spread all over the country and it makes sense to fly if we want to maximize vacation time around our children's busy school schedules. My kids all have their own frequent flyer numbers and have started to accumulate miles. When I travel alone with my three children, people often comment that they "Don't know how I do it," or they look upon me with pity and say, "I'm glad it's you and not me."

Traveling with Pets : from Vets and More : Valuable Information
"While your pet cannot wear a collar in his crate -- it's not safe, since it can get hung up -- put an ID tag on a piece of elastic around his neck. Be sure the crate has contact phone numbers for both ends of the journey prominently displayed: Your home number will be of little use if you're not there."
"Unless you absolutely have no choice, only take a direct flight. If you must change flights, be sure you can collect and then re-check your dog at the layover airport. Try to give yourself a long enough layover to take him out for a walk."
"Remember your pet's life relies on the attentiveness of airline personnel. Most of these employees are excellent and caring, but mistakes do happen. You should be prepared to pester airline personnel to confirm that your pet has been loaded and has made the same connections you have. If your pet is flying unaccompanied, talk to freight-handling personnel at every airport your pet will visit."

If your pet is a cat or small dog whose carrier will fit under an airline seat, you have the best option of all: Choose an airline that will allow you to bring your pet in his carrier into the passenger compartment as carry-on baggage. ....

Helpful hints for flying with your pets
- Pack a first aid kit for your pet just in case. Check with airline, FAA, etc guidelines on what you may carry as far as supplies or any medications your pet may need. (As we saw, airlines do not have to administer any first aid to pets.)
- Doors must close securely, but don't lock them in case the pet needs to be rescued unexpectedly by you or someone else. Often the airline has specific rules on their web site such as where to place labels, "Live Animal."
- Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian. The certificate must meet specific requirements and be obtained with in a certain number of days before the flight. Carry it with you along with a current photo of your pet.
- It's best to be on the same flight as your pet, to have him or her in the cabin with you and to be on a non-stop, direct flight when it is not too hot. Flying together means if your pet's flight has a sudden delay, you're there with your pet.
- Exercise the pet before departure.
- Place complete identification on the outside and inside the crate.
- Allow your pet to get used to the carrier or crate that will be used on the trip. The same goes for any leash or harness that will be used.
-
Lining the carrier with in different ways with absorbent padding in case of an accident is suggested a lot.
I also saw suggestions of owners who'd pre-trained their dogs (pets and service animals) to go into an airport lavatory and go to the bathroom on a disposable pad. This can save valuable time if changing planes for instance.
In-cabin Pets Some Restrictions : from airline policy web pages
You may or may not have thought of some of these things.
You may want to remember to bring a leash and harness even though your pet will be in the carrier. At least going through x-ray, the carrier must go through the machine but your pet will be in your arms.
Pay attention to the weather, particularly how hot it is. Many airlines have restrictions about pets' flying in the hotter months.
- The animals must be harmless, not disruptive, odorless, and require no attention during flight.
- If the pet becomes ill during the flight, oxygen or other first aid procedures will not be administered.
- In the event of an emergency, an oxygen mask may not be available for the cat or dog.
- Southwest Airlines will not be responsible if a Customer misses a flight due to the need to take the cat or dog to an outside relief area. Flight departures will not be delayed or held in order for connecting Customers to take a pet to an animal relief area.
- Southwest Airlines will not accept pet remains in the cabin of the aircraft.
- When passing through security, Customers will be asked to hold the pet and walk through the screening device while the carrier is x-rayed.
- From Frontier Airlines Policy: "For safety reasons, the pet must remain in the travel container at all times. If your pet is disruptive, you must soothe him/her without taking him from the pet container."
- From United Airlines Pet Policies: "Summer embargo - breed restriction - For the safety of your animal, United Airlines does not accept the following short-nosed dog breeds, or mixed-breed dogs exhibiting the short-nosed characteristics of these breeds, as either checked baggage or cargo from June 1st through September 30th of each year. This restriction does not apply to animals traveling with you in the cabin."
- From American Airlines: "Dog show participants should be aware that capacity is sometimes reached, and checked pets are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis."
-
Sedation: According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, in most cases cats and dogs should not be given sedatives or tranquilizers prior to flying. An animal's natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation, which can be dangerous when the kennel is moved.
Whether flying as a cabin or checked pet, animals are exposed to increased altitude pressures, which can create respiratory and cardiovascular problems for dogs and cats which are sedated or tranquilized. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs and snub-nosed cats are especially affected. -- American Airlines - If your travel plans include travel on another airline, please contact the airline directly to reserve space, determine fees and obtain additional information about traveling with your pet on the other airline. Please note that Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air do not transfer pets traveling in the baggage compartment to other carriers. Pets must be claimed and rechecked to the connecting carrier.

After the delay
"Each airline has its own policies about what it will do for delayed passengers waiting at the airport; there are no federal requirements. If you are delayed, ask the airline staff if it will pay for meals or a phone call. Some airlines, often those charging very low fares, do not provide any amenities to stranded passengers. Others may not offer amenities if the delay is caused by bad weather or something else beyond the airline's control. Contrary to popular belief, airlines are not required to compensate passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled."
"...If your flight is canceled, most airlines will rebook you on their first flight to your destination on which space is available, at no additional charge. If this involves a significant delay, find out if another carrier has space and ask the first airline if they will endorse your ticket to the other carrier. Finding extra seats may be difficult, however, especially over holidays and other peak travel times."
Some airlines, such as United, have their Known Delays, Cancellations and Diversions policy on their web site. I also found a flight delay information page for Delta Airlines. The information was more difficult to find on American Airlines' web site.
