Have Simulator, Will Fly
How I use FSX to learn flying in Bulgaria (and neighboring countries).
Customizing FSX for Bulgaria
Customization involves using add-on scenery and aircraft repaints. I've not yet checked the available repaints for e.g. Hemus Air, but I did tried the Sofia Airport All-in-one scenery which includes the new runway and terminal. I've downloaded v2.0 of the scenery from IVAO - Bulgaria, and installed it according to the instructions. And I have to say it's a great add-on; the new terminal looks great and even the neighboring roads are there. The only problem I've found so far is that the GPS runway coordinates are not updated and still point to the old runway (which is now a taxiway)
Useful Books About Flying
Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook: The Ultimate Private Pilot Book
This is a very very good book with all the stuff you need to know to become a private pilot. I've particularly enjoyed the chapters about meteorology, maps and navigation
Microsoft Flight Simulator X For Pilots Real World Training
Learn to use the simulator to 'train for real' and see what are the differences between the simulated and real flight.
I really cannot recommend it enough. A must.
Flight-Simming Links
Mainly bulgarian related
- BG Spotters
- Aviation photos, news, forums
- Route Finder
- Good flight-planning tool. Select the start and destination airports and let Route Finder do the rest. The navigation database is constantly updated.
- IVAO - Bulgaria
- The Bulgarian division of IVAO (I'm a member of it). The site has a lot of resources like add-on scenery, airport maps etc. The sceneries are for FS2004 and the maps are in PDF format and quite current.
- VACCBUL
- VATTSIM - Bulgaria. There doesn't seem to be much activity there lately.
- Aviopedia
- Bulgarian aviation encyclopedia (still not much to read there)
Aviation-Related Stuff
- Flying in Europe
- Great site with lots of resources - weather, airports, flight planning etc. Looks a little outdated, but definitely check it out.
- Jeppesen Weather
- Weather analysis and forecast for the surface and different flight levels. Covers the entire world.
- Flight plan assistant
- Create and check flight plans.
- E6B Style Online Calculator
- It's not a replacement of the real E6B, but you can use it to calculate wind speed, direction, wind correction angle or density altitude.
Resources
Useful stuff to download and print
- Navigation and Weather Logs (.pdf):
- A practical, well designed and free printable weather log, navigation log and flight planning form.
- Printable E6-B Flight Computer
- An E6-B is a circular sliderule customized for aviation use. E6Bs are used during flight planning (on the ground before takeoff) to aid in calculating fuel burn, wind correction, time en route, and other items.
