Flip Flops Good for Your Feet

Are Any Flip Flops Good for Your Feet?

The answer is maybe. The closest answer to being correct is some flip flops are better than others for your feet. Flip flops are not really shoes but sandals, and skimpy sandals at that. They basically consist of a flat piece that your foot rests on with a thong that runs between your big toe and second toe. Your toes have to grip to and your legs react differently when wearing flip flops than when wearing shoes.

A recent study found that flip flops, unless you're just wearing them a short distance, like to the pool, are better not worn. But if you insist on wearing flip flops, certain name brands offer better support than others.

News reports say that cheap flip flops should be avoided completely. If they are that squishy "plastic-y" material that just sinks down and provide no support, pass them by. Do not, I repeat, do not wear plastic shoes!

Why Flip Flops Can Cause Damage

Shoes, not flip flops, but fun shoes.Shoes are meant to be worn to support and protect our feet, but many flip flops can damage our feet. The sole of the shoe is important to cushion our feet and the bones in our feet from the pressure of walking. Many cheap sandals and flip flops are thin and offer little to no cushioning. Over time, wearing flip flops can cause serious damage to legs and feet.

These are a few ways that flip flops can cause injury:

- The sole gets caught on an object and is pulled off.
- Stubbed toes happen.
- People walk differently in flip flops changing their gait to accommodate the structureless shoe.
- Flip flop wearers experience heal pain.
- Nine out of ten flip flop wearers have dirty feet. (I just made that up. It's probably more like ten out of ten.)

The straps on flip flops are important, so look for well made flip flops that have a wide strap or thong that is leather, not cotton or plastic.

Reef Sandals

I have 2 pair of Reef sandals

I started wearing Reef sandals several years ago. Yes, they are flip flop style, which admittedly are not the best choice. But, my Reef sandals offer good cushioning and have held up well. The soles are thick and very supportive.

Reef flip flops are actually one of the recommended brands of flip flops for those die hards who simply can't give up their flip flops.

Are you a flip flop wearer? Have they hurt your feet?

I don't wear flip flops any more. Crocs for me. I've given up fashion for comfort!

Unless they're brand new or the really cheap Old Navy kind with the painful seam between the toes, I never have problems with flip flops, and I've not worn anything else for eight years now. I actually think I have better balance, because I have to pay attention to my feet, and while I agree that my stride is shorter...well, it doesn't really bother me. My feet are tougher than they would be wearing shoes that close around my foot and support them like they were made of gold, and I don't have sweaty, stinky feet! It's a win-win kind of situation.

I wear both types; the ones with an open back that we call thongs and the ones with strap that we call sandals, lol. But I haven't been able to find a good pair of leather sandals in ages. Thanks for all of these flip flop ideas!!
