The history of the flip flop - Did you know?.....
Large scale production of flip flop sandals begun in Kobe, Japan in the 1930's as a cottage industry and subsequently helped to jumpstart Japan's recovery after World War II because of the low maufacturing costs and high demand. Mitsubishi, the Japanese conglomerate, bought out many of the early flip flop factories and became their major exporter. In search of cheaper labor, Japan subsequently outsourced production to other Asian countries in the 1960's and '70s.
