What is Flock?

Flock is a social web browser. This means that in additions to the usual things that your browser can do (Flock is based on the same software as Firefox), social bookmarking and networking can all be done from your toolbar, saving loads of time.

Flock for bookmarking

Add favourites to your computer or social bookmarking site from one button.

I very rarely used the favourites button in Internet Explorer, as I had got used to putting things in del.icio.us which was much easier and had the advantage of using tags to organise your items by topic.

In Flock, when you click on the Star button, you can decide where you want to save the item. You're not just limited to del.icio.us either, as Flock has a stack of other social bookmarking sites enabled.

On the address bar, there is the Digg icon all set up and ready to go with one click. If you simply want to email the link to a friend, just click the envelope icon and an email will open up from your preferred email service with the link ready to send. No more copying and pasting links into emails!

You can of course install the Stumble bar and waste a few hours that way, clicking on thumbs up, writing reviews and otherwise exploring the web.

So if you see a site you like and want to share it with others, Flock makes it easy to do in just a few clicks.

Flock and Flickr - a marriage made in heaven

If you are a Flickr user, then Flock has a great feature that will really excite you. Not only can you access Flickr directly from the toolbar, but just by hovering your mouse over a picture on Flickr, you get another set of options:

View Stream - under the toolbar, a media bar will open up showing you other photos uploaded by that member. Click on any of the thumbnails to show the full size page in Flickr, along with user comments.

Blog - Flock will place the picture straight into your blog editor for you - wonderful time saver (just make sure you check that the owner has agreed a creative commons licence).

Email - click on email and Flock will put the picture into an email using your preferred email program. So in my case it goes straight into a Googlemail email ready to send.

Want to see what your Flickr friends have been up to? Just click on the People button and a side bar opens up with all the latest updates.

Flock for bloggers

As you saw above, you can use Flock to insert items directly into a blog post.

You can also integrate your blogging platform so that one click into the key icon on the toolbar will take you straight there. Flock also has its own blog editor which opens its own window so that you can work on a post outside the rest of the browser. Admittedly I haven't used this yet, I am still getting used to all the other great features of this new browser.

When reading other blogs, there is a very useful orange rss feed icon which lights up when Flock detects a feed. One click here and you can subscribe to this feed with ease. Flock has its own feedreader too, but I'm sticking with Google Reader on this one! Even if you use a different reader, the orange button still works.

Another sidebar goody is the clipboard, where you can simply drag and drop useful stuff from a web page for later use.
