Most floor fountains will need to be cleaned every one to three months as a means of preventing the build up of algae and mineral deposits. Cleaning the bowl, rock, and pump of your fountain thoroughly is extremely important - this includes taking your pump apart and cleaning inside it (algae and mineral deposits will eventually clog the fountain's pump). The best way to get your fountain clean is to use a toothbrush, dish detergent, and warm water.

Cleaning the pump of your fountain regularly is also absolutely essential. Check the manufacturer's instructions on opening the pump, take it apart, then soak the elements in a vinegar solution. This will help break down and loosen any mineral deposits making cleaning easier. Cleaning the pump once a month is usually sufficient in soft water areas; in hard water areas, however, it may be necessary to clean the pump twice monthly. A well-maintained pump should last for two to three years, so it is well worth the time and energy it takes to keep it clean.
