Wood is as relevant today as it is thousands of years ago. You would be hard-pressed to find a building material that is as beautiful, tough, versatile, and cost-effective as good old lumber. It is quite easy to maintain and can withstand moderate to rough use. The only glaring drawback with going with a wooden floor is that it can get very slippery. Partly attributed to the wax used to keep it shiny and protected, it simply lacks in the traction department. A good remedy is to place area rugs in strategic locations to help with the traction. You just have to secure it with carpet tape, staples, or some sort of glue and you should be all set.

Carpets are soft and are never slippery. They are also good when mishaps do occur as the added cushioning of the fibers allow for a softer landing. They are certainly better than wood flooring or tile flooring. However, the same fibers that cushion your fall may cause allergies and aggravate chronic respiratory ailments. Dust and pollen, as well as countless bacteria and viruses can hide within the fibers and stay there despite religious vacuuming. If your condition is tolerant of allergens and a little dust floating around, you will have a hard time finding something better than a carpeted floor.
Vinyl squares are inexpensive and easy to lay down. Precut squares are laid out like a big jigsaw puzzle following any patter that you can think of. They offer vibrant colors and are resistant to stains and most chemicals. They offer good traction as the surface is rubbery. The only drawback to this kind of flooring is that it can get quite old and damaged easily. Edges can tear and get caught in wheelchair wheels or people can trip on them. Without this limitation, vinyl can certainly perform and be up to the task.
