The Art Of Arranging Flowers

View tips from every day florists and celebrity florist Preston Bailey. Look at photos of other people events as well as top-line florists for inspiration. Purchase books on floral design or bulk flowers on eBay if you want to try and do the flowers at your own event. Even receiving a box of flowers from an online florist requires a basic knowledge of flower arrangement to get the best from your flowers.

loral design incorporates many things. Its the artistic expression in the actual arrangement and use of color, height, texture. The practical knowledge of the durability of the plant as well as its seasonality and cost. The know-how to arrange it so it lasts. There are more defined floral disciplines, such as the Japanese Ikebana as well.

Step By Step Flower Design

There are no rules

Barnes and Noble Coupon Valentines Day GiftsHere is a step-by-step how-to demonstration of floral design. And the important thing is that there are no rules! A few pointers are given though that you can follow, or not. Basically, the only rule to follow is that your design is pleasing to the eye.

Your first step is to choose your flowers. You should think about the texture of your flowers. You can keep it the same, or you can have it be a variety of mixed blooms (large petals, thin and spidery blossoms, delicate floral poufs, robust and strong buds, etc..). Next you should also pay attention to color. Again, you can go monochromatic (all one color) or a variety of colors. Maybe you'll stick to pastels or go for bright and bold. The choice is yours.

You could also design with regional flowers in mind: Caribbean Flowers, African Flowers, etc.. Maybe you're interested in creating an arrangement featuring your favorite flower: lets say Gerbera Daisies. The final word is up to you (and maybe your budget).

Different flowers will be more or less widely available at different points during the year. Stick with seasonal flowers if you want to keep your budget low and your choices more environmentally friendly. In fact, local and seasonal flowers are the most "green" and environmentally responsible decision. Best yet, purchase them fresh from a local farmer's market.

After you've chosen your flowers, here are the steps to create a floral arrangement in a vase of water with no additional florists tools:

  1. Start filling your vase with greenery - This will help to hold your arrangement in place

  2. Add the structural flowers - This will set the height for your arrangement and this designer states that "odd numbers of flowers are more pleasing to the eye"

  3. Add your filler flowers - Be sure to create a round that is equally appealing when viewed from any side: you can alternately go assymetrical however.

  4. Add spilling flowers - These droop down over the vase and pull the whole floral arrangement together.

As a last step to keep your flowers fresh for the longest amount of time, remove your flowers from the vase and replenish it with fresh water and flower food. When designing your arrangement, bits of plant and leaves will have fallen in to the water and will cause it to wilt sooner. Durability

Some flowers don't tolerate heat, light or can just look tired very quickly. Be sure your flower choice will withstand your event.

An interesting use of leaves

Focus on more than the bloom

Lately, I've seen some interesting uses of leaves. These techniques can make even single blooms look updated. Jane Packer's rose votive trio features votive holders wrapped in monstera leaves and held in place with wire.

and candles and twigs and more!

Sometimes a centerpiece not only has no greenery and no blossoms. Stark? Yes. Elegant and modern? YES!

Spring Centerpiece Ideas

Create your own stunning floral arrangement in celebration of Spring

Epicurious magazine steps in just in time for Mother's Day with an excellent article on how to create your own Spring Floral Centerpiece worthy of gracing the most scrumptious spring brunch. Epicurious is a foodie site, and as such their floral arrangements feature unexpected edible elements. They make use of herbs to incorporate the sense of smell (who doesn't love the smell of spring onions, dill or other fresh herbs?). Epicurious also advises us to:

  • Use our instincts.

  • Incorporate unexpected elements.

  • Make substitutions when trying to recreate a design (professional florists do this one too!)

  • Get creative with the "vase" that we use.

  • Place longer stems in the center and shorter stems on the sides when arranging your centerpiece in order to achieve a more full and rounded look.

This ranunculus arrangement looks really fresh with asparagus stalks bordering the interior of the square vase and artichoke accenting the arrangement itself!

This lilly centerpiece has an added dimension when peppered with rosemary sprigs and bursting from an unexpected container: a tin of tomatoes!
