Many contaminants are in the air inside our home. You can bring them in by using a motorized lawn mower and other fuel burning equipment or you can bring in germs just by visiting someone that is sick especially when you visit the hospital. And if your home is very "tight" as far as weatherized and energy efficient windows and doors, the contaminants can linger. For these reasons, to name a few, many indoor plants are great for counteracting off gassed chemicals while maintaining a balance of humidity. Also, raising your windows or opening doors especially after a good rain will help your indoor air quality. Furthermore, after mowing the lawn or working with other fuel burning equipment, removing your clothing and placing them in the washer will help keep down the contaminant level in your home. And if perhaps, you live with a smoker especially around children, please think about the 4,000 chemicals that are released each time a cigarette is lite and is emitted into the air and of that 4,000 chemicals, 60 are potentially deadly! In addition to the dangers of cigarette smoke inside your home, many people use moth balls to store clothes with or use as a deodorizer inside the home. Have you ever walked pass someone or went into their home and could smell the odor of moth balls? Moth balls are pesticides (poisoniness) and not good to inhale.

As you can see, in addition to using plants to clean the indoor air in your home, there are several other preventive steps that can be taken to eliminate bad indoor air quality. Some advice in choosing indoor plants:

If you have small children or pets in the home, caution should be taken when selecting plants because some are poisoniness, such as English Ivy and should not be eaten. Also, for optimizing their cleaning ability, the plants should be kept clean, such as using a mild detergent and water to clean the leaves. And if you like very shiny leaves, mayonnaise or vegetable oil can be applied to the leaves after cleaning.
