Florida Highwaymen

Florida Highwaymen Art started in the 1950s when a small number of African Americans dedicated their talents to painting the Florida landscape.  There were known to have been at least 27 of these artists and perhaps the best known of these is James Gibson.  The term Highwaymen was coined by Jim Fitch, the curator of an art museum in Central Florida.

The Highwaymen created idyllic, quickly realized images of the Florida dream and peddled some 100,000 of them from the trunks of their cars.  All of them lived in the area of Fort Pierce, Florida.

The value of Highwaymen paintings has soared in recent years and are now widely appreciated and collectible.
