Florida Highwaymen Art

Florida Highwaymen Art started in the 1950s when a small number of African Americans dedicated their talents to painting the Florida landscape.  There were known to have been at least 27 of these artists and perhaps the best known of these is James Gibson.  The term Highwaymen was coined by Jim Fitch, the curator of an art museum in Central Florida.

The Highwaymen created idyllic, quickly realized images of the Florida dream and peddled some 100,000 of them from the trunks of their cars.  All of them lived in the area of Fort Pierce, Florida.

While the value of Highwaymen paintings has soared in recent years, no authoritative account of the lives and work of these black Florida artists has existed.

The Highwaymen: Florida's African-American Landscape Painters

The Highwaymen introduces a group of young black artists who painted their way out of the despair awaiting them in citrus groves and packing houses of 1950s Florida. As their story recaptures the imagination of Floridians and their paintings fetch ever-escalating prices, the legacy of their freshly conceived landscapes exerts a new and powerful influence on the popular conception of the Sunshine State.
Gary Monroe tells the story behind the Highwaymen, a loose association of 25 men and 1 woman from the Fort Pierce area--a fascinating mixture of individual talent, collective enterprise, and cultural heritage. He also offers a critical look at the paintings and the movement's development. Added to this are personal reminiscences by some of the artists, along with a gallery of 63 full-color reproductions of their paintings.

The Highwaymen Florida's Outsider Artists

DVD
This is the story of a group of young, untrained African-American landscape painters that emerged from the small central Florida town of Fort Pierce in the late 50s and early 60s. Segregation and racist attitudes of the time prevented them from working with traditional art galleries. Instead, they traveled throughout the state selling their paintings out of the trunks of their cars. The going rate was around $35 a painting. They painted on wallboard because it was cheaper than canvas. Back then, some called it "junk art." But in 1995 the Highwaymen became recognized by the art world. Today their paintings sometimes sell for thousands of dollars, and they are considered an important part of Florida's 20th Century cultural history. It is estimated that their aggregate work may exceed 200,000 paintings.

Harold Newton: The Original Highwayman

In 1954 artist Harold Newton (1934-1994) began traveling throughout his native Florida to sell the vibrant, dramatic landscape paintings that characterize his oeuvre; a decade later, he had an inspired group of about two dozen followers, largely self-taught African-American artists, known collectively as the Highwaymen because they often sold their paintings at roadsides to passing motorists. Photographer and writer Monroe (The Highwaymen: Florida's African-American Landscape Painters) prefaces this collection of 165 paintings with an informative and enjoyable essay on Newton that includes a vividly detailed biography of the artist, largely based on reminiscences from Newton's fellow artists, friends and family. Monroe also examines Newton's technique and the significance of his legacy, which Monroe argues was defined by the artist's ability to portray Florida as a vigorous and fertile Promised Land. Also of interest are Monroe's comments on the capriciousness of the art market; while Newton's work was little known throughout his career, it has become highly collectible in the past decade. This is an excellent, beautifully illustrated introduction to a dynamic painter that sparks the viewer's interest in Newton and his fellow highwaymen, all of whom created against the backdrop of Jim Crow.
