Birds of Paradise

Bird-of-paradise or crane flower is a native of South Africa and is closely related to the banana.

The herbaceous plant derives its common names from the unique flower it bears, which resembles a brightly colored bird in flight.

Bird-of-paradise makes an attractive landscape plant throughout Florida, although it requires cold protection in the northern part of the state.

Blooms appear intermittently most of the year. Healthy, mature plants can produce as many as three dozen flower spikes a year, which will last up to two weeks when cut.

Bird-of-paradise grows in most soils, but does best in fertile, organic soils with good drainage.

Butterfly Ginger Lily

In the summer and fall it bears fragrant flowers that resemble butterflies, thus the common name.

Butterfly Ginger lily is also been said to attract butterflies.

It is a popular landscape plant throughout Florida, the Gulf Coast, California, the Caribbean and tropical and subtropical areas worldwide.

Ginger lily makes a beautiful background plant and looks great planted in large clumps at the edge of woodsy areas.

Agapanthus Flower

The Agapanthus Flower has funnel-shaped flowers, in varying shades of blue colors with white flowering forms occurring.

Reaching 26 inches high and about a foot wide, this Agapanthus thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil.

Agapanthus is also commonly known as the Lily of the Nile, African Blue Lily, and African Lily.

Growing agapanthus must be the best test of a gardening green-thumb. For if you can't grow this plant - taking into consideration that others nearby can - then you may want to consider finding a new hobby.

lantana

Known for their hemispherical clusters of small, bright-colored flowers, lantana plants can reach 6' high in Florida landscaping

The flowers may be yellow, orange, white, red and purple, and often colors are mixed within the same cluster.

Lantana plants make good specimens. They're also used as border shrubs and as ground cover.

Lantana plants tolerate salt spray very well, so they are popular in seaside communities -- another reason why they're a symbol of Florida landscaping.

Lantana plants are salt-tolerant, and they're drought-tolerant once established.

Cardinal Flowers

Occuring naturally in marshes and wooded streambanks, this beautiful semi-aquatic plant produces tall spikes of tubular bright red flowers from mid-summer to late autumn.

Along with red forms of bee balm this plant is a must if you want to attract hummingbirds.

The delicate looking, but boldly colored flowers create a strong presence near water features or planted in masses

All Cardinal Flowers require moist, not saturated soil and will tolerate dry conditions for only a short time.

Cardinal Flower grows best in partial shade.

Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera Daisy is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family. It was named in honor of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber, by a friend.

Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colors.

The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers.

It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world.
