My Florida Keys Vacation
The Florida Keys seem to belong as much to the Caribbean as to the continental US. For quite some time it fascinated me, until I had a chance to see it all for myself.
I did my homework first and found that the Florida Keys weather explains why it is one of the most desired vacation spots in the US. There are practically only two seasons in the Keys: a hot and rather humid summer lasting from May to October, and a little cooler and drier "winter", with temperatures in the mid-seventies during the day, dropping into the sixties at night. Because the Keys are surrounded by warm ocean waters, the air temperature is very stable and doesn't vary much from day to night.

Trip from Buffalo to Florida Keys
We (my wife and I) took our first trip in November, which is a transition month, after the hot summer and tropical storm season is practically over, but the ocean is still warm for swimming.
When we were searching the internet we stumbled upon many interesting Florida Keys vacation packages. We also noticed that November must be a low season month - there were really great deals available. That also meant we shouldn't expect crowds of people everywhere, and we found that to be true. With a lot of hotels and resorts in the Florida Keys we didn't have any problem finding a place we liked. Eventually, we decided to go with our own plan and split our week long vacation into three stops, this way we could see as much of the Keys as possible.
Our flight from Buffalo to Miami went quickly, then we rented a car and started our journey. First stop - Key Largo.
Driving to the Keys from the Fort Lauderdale or Miami airport is simple: keep going south until there is only one road left - State Road #1.
South of Miami the road runs through a low lying grassy terrain, the easternmost stretch of the Everglades, eventually crossing a new bridge leading to Key Largo.
Finding any place in the Keys is even simpler - just pay attention to the mile markers located next to the main and only road crossing all the islands.
Here is how you can get there
Key Largo - The first part of our Florida Keys Vacation
The first and the largest in the chain of islands, Key Largo did not impress us at first glance. It looked like time had stopped there in the 50's or 60's: no glitzy hotels or fancy restaurants by the roadside. We quickly found our hotel, a one-night stop only, before a more thorough exploration of the island would begin. It was getting late so we decided to find a place where we could have dinner, remembering from our previous trip to Florida that establishments often close early in the sunshine state. What a delight it was to walk in the warm and calm evening air, and then, two hours later, do it again on the way back. The restaurant, with more staff than guests, was another indication of the low season. We did not have to wait long for our food or maybe we just did not notice time going by, sipping wine in the nice atmosphere of the salsa music performed by a live band.
The next morning, at first light, I stepped outside to check what was going on in the water, just behind the building, from where we could hear a variety of different sounds throughout the night. What I found was a beautiful view on a quiet bay, surrounded by many small islands, or keys, covered with mangrove.
The water was quite deep and soon I noticed a huge swarm of fish, hundreds of them, moving slowly along the shore. Each fish weighed at least a pound, it was really a big show of nature. But that wasn't all. First bubbles, then big gray shapes in the water could mean only one thing: manatees. There they were, 3 or 4 of them, feeding in the morning light, not paying much attention to a few observers who gathered in the meantime on the shore. That morning started with a bang, at least for me.
Later that day we solved another mystery: Key Largo looked a little dated from the road, but that was not what everybody was paying attention to. Most properties were on the water and looked best from that direction. Sometimes they could not be seen from the road at all, hidden behind lush vegetation. That was the case with our next destination, a very nice resort which we had some trouble finding in Tavernier, a town just west of Key Largo.
Tavernier was on the same island but the town looked more modern. Our resort sat on the ocean side, far enough from the main road to offer undisturbed voices of nature. The view and sounds from the balcony were so soothing - a gentle whisper of braking waves occasionally broken by calls of sea birds.
Yeah, baby, that was bordering on a Caribbean experience
From our home base we made several trips: took a glass bottom tour of the coral reef, searched for the most beautiful beach in the Keys, and visited a couple of state parks. We liked the Bahia Honda State Park, offering a crescent beach over a quiet bay.

Key West
The last part of our Florida Keys Vacation

We stayed in Key West for 2 more nights, seeing some of the local attractions: the Hemingway house, Nancy Forester's Secret Garden full of orchids and other tropical plants, and The Key West Lighthouse. Of course, at the end of the day we had to experience the sunset ritual on Mallory Square. It's unbelievable that this place transforms into a huge party every night. Stands with drinks and snacks, many talented performers to watch, local bands to listen or dance to. Everybody has so much fun.
When the sun is ready to set, people move closer to the edge of the deck to watch the sun disappearing behind the horizon, applauding when the show is over. I have to say that this was a really enjoyable and unique experience. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to see more Key West attractions because on the second day we actually left Key West behind and took a boat trip to Dry Tortugas. Well, on the positive side, now we have an excuse to go there again.
Altogether, our Florida Keys vacation was a wonderful experience and we did not want to go back to cold and snowy Buffalo even if not all of those Florida Keys attractions lived up to our expectations.
The Florida coral reef seen through the glass bottom is not as spectacular as the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia (but it is more conveniently located), and the beaches in general are rather small and narrow. In most places the ocean is very shallow for a long distance from the shore, so swimming is not very practical, except for children to splash around in.
To get to good snorkeling or diving places you have to take a boat and anchor it a mile or more out into the sea.
But all this didn't really matter that much. What is great about the Florida Keys is their exotic, tropical scenery, with coconut palms leading the pack, and an overall sense of being in a place far away from the stresses of modern life.
