The best way for me anyway, is to distract yourself for what's going on by either chatting to the tattoo artist ( please note some artists do not like to talk during tattooing ) or by taking a book with you, or some other way to take you away to a better place and help you ignore the pain.

Before you get any tattoo make sure you are sure its the perfect one for you, sleep on it for a month or two just to make clear that its something you really want.
