- A peep into Japanese traditions
- Visitors to the ?Japan festival' at VJT hall in the city on Saturday were treated to a rare glimpse of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony by the organisers.
The Japanese tea ceremony or the way of tea is a traditional ritual based on Taoism and influenced by Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea is ceremonially prepared by a skilled practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting.
Since a tea practitioner must be familiar with the production and types of tea, with kimono, calligraphy, flower arranging, ceramics, incense and a wide range of other disciplines and traditional arts in addition to his or her school's tea practices, the study of tea ceremony takes many years and often lasts a lifetime. - Sioux City Journal: I Believe: Broken flowers carry a message

HAY RIVER - Gayle Croucher says being a florist involves much more than many people realize.
Croucher, the florist at The Woodshed Gift & Garden Centre in Hay River, said she laughs when she thinks of a customer who once said, "All you do is throw flowers in a vase."

Instead, she said flower arrangement is an art form.
"There has to be a personal style," she explained.
A florist must have - or learn - an eye for colour and a sense of balance, she said.
"I can sometimes see the finished product before I begin," she said. "It's like an artist with a canvas."
And, while most people ask for flowers in a vase, there are other ways to display them.
"There is so much more to flower arrangement," Croucher said. - Flower Arranging For Hobbyists Like You And Me

Doris Swartz sits beside one of her Ikebana creations.
Wisconsin is home to a master of the ancient Japanese art of beautifully arranging cut flowers, leaves and stems, otherwise known as Ikebana (pronounced kay-ba-na). Longtime Brookfield resident Doris Swartz was granted the degree of master of Ikebana recently, after many years of studying and teaching the art to others. "I have been involved with Ikebana for about 47 years," says the 87-year-old widow and mother of four. "I became interested in it because it is so entirely different than what we do in the U.S. Even though I had been a nationally-accredited floral judge, the Oriental style of floral design was more appealing to me," she says. In contrast to the massing of many blooms, typical of flower arrangements in western countries, Japanese flower arrangement is based on the line of twigs and leaves, filled in with a small number of blooms. "It looks like there is nothing to it, but it is really quite complex," Swartz says. The structure is based on a scalene triangle (with three unequal sides) with three main points, considered in some schools of Ikebana to symbolize heaven, earth and man. - Unknown
