Beautiful Botanicals

I love the structure and shape of flowers, functional yet beautiful, a brilliant contrast.  I have some drawings of flowers for sale here but I take commissions so if what you are looking for isn't here, contact me.

I also use flowers as a background for much of my digital artwork.  For more on this please look me up on RedBubble http://www.redbubble.com/people/dak1

You are an artist if...

Complete this sentence.

Here are a few ideas to get started:

...there are cadmiun yellow fingerprints on your phone.
...you find blank paper exciting.
...you go out for milk and come back with paint.
...your friends no longer notice the splatters on your face.
...you are offended by blank wall space.

Nice one and I'm pretty sure a lot of time went into this.

-you are quickly sketching everything you see along the side of the road, as your driving, in your head.

-you imagine what colors you would use to attain colors of objects you see while you're out running errands!

I love this! I'm going to put a link to this lens on my lens "Flower Power" Thanks!

What I'm All About

After years of working as a black and white photographer the move to art seems to have taken with it my eye for black and white. A few of my projects have been in colour but I'm never as happy with them as I am with grey tones.

As a consequence I work mostly in graphite pencil, sometimes in charcoal. I describe myself as a scribbler. This is because of the way that I work, firstly I draw a rough outline and then I scribble to build up layers of light and dark shades.

Why move from photography to art? I blame Ebay. I was selling a few photographs but having trouble seling enough. Deciding to be sensible, I did some research, and found that more people bought art. I don't really know what made me think for one second that I would be able to make the switch apart from the fundamental belief I have that I can learn anything.

So I found myself embarking on a journey into art and to my extreme surprise the first few pictures I put up for sale actually sold! Nothing better for a confidence boost.

When I was a child at school I always wanted to be good at art but I struggled. It didn't help that my friends could create a masterpiece whilst gossiping and making sarcastic comments about the teachers and that I couldn't draw the most basic of shapes even when concentrating with all my might. Looking back, I see that it was because the art teachers handed us blank paper then disappeared to gossip and make sarcastic comments about us, all the while neglecting to actually teach anything. At the time, though, I thought that art was either something you could instinctively do or not.

But anyway, I left school in the sure and certain knowledge that I was not an artist. The long and the short of that conviction was that I now have a science degree: I left university in the sure and certain knowledge that I was not a scientist.

The art thing from childhood did not gone away, however, and so I had the bright idea of taking up photography to capture the images I wanted. Ha!

I haven't picked up my camera for about a year now and I carry a pencil and paper around with me, just in case.

The journey has not taken me into the realms of digital art, using many of the old photographs I took years ago and giving them a new lease of life.
