How to Grow Flowers the Easy Way

The flowers that you see here were all grown from seeds. You are probably thinking, big deal, lots of people grow flowers from seeds. And, you are right, lots of people do, but the method I use to grow flowers from seeds is inexpensive, easy and actually a lot of fun.

If you are like most people when you think of growing flowers from seeds, you probably think of three possible ways.

1. Plant the seed indoors under grow lights
2. Plant seeds outdoors in the ground or in pots
3. Plants seeds in pots in a greenhouse

What if I told you there is a way to combine the best parts of all three of these ways and have more flowers than you ever thought possible?

Sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it? But ,trust me it is true and many, many other gardeners have discovered this method and are reaping the rewards.

I have to warn you though, this method is addictive and may possibly cause you to neglect all other things in your life. :)

Winter Sowing is the Easiest Way to Grow Flowers From Seeds

At least me and my friends think so :)

The method is simple you sow seeds in covered containers, outdoors in the winter. Come spring, you will have a bounty of flowers waiting to be planted.

This wonderful method of growing flowers from seed is called surprisingly enough winter sowing. It is an amazingly simple and very effective way of having the flower gardens of your dreams very quickly and inexpensively.

It is also an environmentally friendly approach to flower gardening, because you can recycle containers to plant your seeds in.

Growing Flowers From Seeds, Outdoors, in the Dead of Winter

Are You Kidding Me?

No, I am not kidding. You really sow the seeds outdoors in winter.

So, what do you need to get started with winter sowing?

The first thing you need is seeds. This is the part that is the most fun, deciding what you want to grow. One of may favorite places for easy to grow flower seeds is ebay.

You need some kind of containers, lots of people use empty milk jugs and take out containers. My favorite is empty buckets that ice cream came in. The reason I like the ice cream buckets is you need to cover your containers and the buckets already have a lid. Whatever you use to cover your containers needs to have holes punched in it so air can circulate and moisture can get in.

You also need good quality potting soil, leave the cheap stuff alone, it will dry out and your seeds will not germinate.

And of course, since this is called winter sowing, you need winter. Lots of people start their winter sowing on December 21, which is the first day of winter.

By Winter Sowing Of Course!

This first picture picture shows a garden I started with almost 100% of the plants being winter sown. This picture was taken on April 28. Not very attractive or much to look at, huh?

What a Change From April to June

This picture was taken from almost the same angle, at the same spot in the new flower garden.

It was taken on June 28. In two months time, I had what looked like a well established flower garden. Try that with nursery grown plants, it will cost you a fortune.

I know these pictures are small, but they give you an idea of what is possible with winter sowing.
