History of Mother's Day
Mother's Day was traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. In England it is celebrated to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. And by religious order the holiday was later expanded in its scope to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday. Which is celebrated every 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter).
In England, the poor worked as servants for the wealthy. Because most of the jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. And on Mothering Sunday, day off were given to servants, wherein they were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. With them is a special cake, which is called the mothering cake, as a little present to provide a festive touch.
Christianity spread throughout Europe, and there came a celebration to honor the "Mother Church" - believing that a spiritual power give them life and protect them from harm. And from those times, church festival was born blended with Mothering Sunday celebration . In honor of all the mothers as well as the church.
But the festivity didn't last, the practice of this fantastic tradition ceased slowly. Moreso, when English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time.Mother's Day was first suggested after the American Civil War by social activist Julia Ward Howe. She started a one-woman peace crusade and made an impassioned "appeal to womanhood" to rise against war. And on that same year, she made a powerful plea in proclamation of the original Mother's Day celebration that made it known widely. And an idea of promoting a "Mother's Day for Peace" to be celebrated on June 2, to honor peace, motherhood and womanhood. Her remarkable contribution in the establishment of Mother's Day, remains in the fact that she organized a Mother's Day dedicated to peace. And a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.
It should be remembered that Howe's idea was influenced by Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, followed by her daughter Anna Jarvis, who finally succeeded in introducing Mother's Day as we celebrate it today. She intended to start a Mother's Day, to honor the mothers. Two years after her mother's death, Anna Jarvis together with her friends, decided to dedicate her life to her mother's cause and to establish Mother's Day to "honor mothers, both living and dead." She made a letter-writing campaign to urge ministers, businessmen and congressmen in declaring a national Mother's Day holiday.
With her eagerness and efforts, the first mother's day was observed on May 10, 1908, by a church service honoring her mother the Late Mrs. Reese Jarvis, in the Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna's dream came true when on May 9, 1914, the Presidential proclamation declared the 2nd Sunday of May to be observed as Mother's Day to honor the mothers.

For The Love of Mom
Mothers are a special breed of people. They give life and watch over them. On mother's day, it's our turn to give back to our mothers by remembering them and making it a special day for them.
How? By spending the day with them, giving them gifts and just simply showing them how much we appreciate them and what they have done for us. It's not too hard really. Some of us might go online to pick gifts.
Some will take their mothers out to dinner. Some might send parcels to show their love. Whatever the case may be, the most important thing is remembering them on that special day.
